I got sick of it so I opened the case and taped over the switch. The switch is a tiny little fragile thing, and the mechanism for actuating it is a *really* bad design.

I have never had the problem since. If I wanted to, I could run it without the battery cover on at all (not that you would want to...) :)

hey folks,

i have my new battery cover/door for some days now, and my problem seems gone.
no more complains from wm5 about open battery cover.
difference is, this cover now sits perfectly tight, compared to the old one. i was able to move the old cover for like 1mm from left to right, meaning it didn't really fit 100%.
moving it for some time i could absolutely make the x51v go into standby because of the open battery door error.
so it might be worth a try for all of you having problems to call dell and have them ship a new cover to you. this did the trick for me, at least for now ;-)

I used it for quite a while (the latch, that is). I had a problem of my record button getting pressed when I wasn't using it (while in my bag, and i've got the metal rhinoskin cover), and I'd end up with a 130 MB wav file, an almost dead battery, and a very fussy Axim. Of course, I've now found the option to not allow the record button to pull it out of hibernate...

It happened to me today for the first time... after going mountain biking. May have been the bumps.

I too have the problem mentioned. I can't see how it can be a problem with the x51v switch or battery cover because it isn't a repeatable error (at least for me). I would expect to be able to reproduce the error by moving the cover.

It only occurs when I turn it off and leave it off for more than a few hours (usually overnight). I can't see how a switch copuld move whilst the Axim is sat in it's cradle on it's own without being touched. During the day, I can turn it on and off at will and I have never had the battery latch message.

I admit that I don't know a lot about the subject, but could it be yet another software bug, relating to the low power mode the x51v enters when you turn it off into sdtandby mode?

try putting tap on the end of the legs, a couple of thicknesses of scotch tape will work. if it clears the problem then it is the door.

I'd been getting the latch error the last week with my 2200mah battery. Tape fixed it.

I also use the lockout switch a lot. Especially with mortplayer so screen or button presses don't interrupt it. Again, with the extended battery and the slipcase the pressure on the buttons could activate it and drain the batteries.

I found the perfect solution! Late at night, under the cover of darkness, steal your wife's favorite nail enamel. A quick dab on the right bottom latch hook (on the surface facing you), let it dry, dab again. Let dry again. You can even file it off a bit once it is dry if you were over-enthusiastic with the enamel. This will ensure the dang switch stays depressed! No more battery latch nag! Now return the nail polish bottle to its place and wipe off any fingerprints you sure left on the handle when you spilled it all over the battery cover.

MacGyver would be proud!!

that is a great answer. better than tape.
we used to use nail polish to secure tuning slugs in radio equipment and also to tell if someone had tampered with a screw on electronic equipment covers.

I just received my new battery door ....But The Wrong one!!

Is everyone that is having this issue—Having it with the Std. Battery or the larger battery?

I only have the smaller one and Dell says there is NO part number for it.
And I need to replace the WHOLE unit....!!!!

WTF.......That is just Dumb...

Any one got a new door for the Std. battery??

Or a part number?>??

Thanks

What a bummer. Is your axim working fine right now(other than the batt door issue? Knowing how hard it is to get an Axim up and running and syncing with your comp perfectly, i would be hesitant to replace a working unit. A friend of mine had a similar situation. He replaced a good unit with a replacement which didn't work as well. Took him ages to reconfigure his laptop and axim.:exc:

I just got a new one for the standard battery by referencing this site to the Dell rep on a chat session. I pasted a few posts to him about the problem and he sent a new cover no problem. It didn't make the problem go away however. I'm thinking I'll try the nail polish thing vs. the tape (If I can sneak if from the wife).

I had that problem with extended battery. A drop of super-glue solved the problem.
