How do you Select multiple contacts?

I know this should be simple but I can't get it to work. I'd like to select several contacts in a row to delete them but I can't select more than one. I've tried my own version of a "tap and drag" but it just opens the first contact. Any help will be greatly appreciated....it gets tiring doing everything one at a time!

Do you use Active Sync? If so, you can more easily delete contacts in Outlook on your desktop, and then synchronise again?

Open the Soft Input Panel (SIP) from within Contacts and use the keyboards SHIFT or CTRL keys to select additional items. Works the same as on a desktop.
