I own two "original equipment" cradles for my Axim x51v, one for work and one for home. They are both hooked up to the stock charger.

The light on the cradle at work stays on all the time whenever it is plugged in.

The light on the cradle at home is never on, except for a brief second when I plug the power cord in. Therefore I know the light is operational.

What is the light supposed to indicate?

The unit functions adequately otherwise: it charges and syncs as the one at work.

What think ye? A defective unit? A different power supply? Significant or not?

That light is meant to tell you the charging status of a battery that you have charging in the slot on the cradle. If you don't have a battery in it and the light is still on, then that part of the charging circuitry may be damaged for some reason.

Excelllllennnnt! Yes, that is the difference. There is no battery in the slot. I think I will go buy an extra so that the light lights up.
