I'm new to this forum and I hope someone can help me out.
My IT dept recently upgraded me from Win2K to XP Pro. Before the upgrade my X51 worked fine. Now the pc detects Axim X51 as Windows Mobile-Based Device and asks to search for drivers. I click yes and it does not find anthing. It comes back with an error stating "There was a problem installing this hardware. The name is already in use as either a service name or a service display name"
I've uninstalled Activesync. I've deleted all refs to the Axim in registry. I've tried everything I know many times and the same thing keeps happening.
IT dept has no clue. Dell Support wants me to pay to talk to someone on the phone and Microsoft says since Windows was from Dell and it is their problem.
try this. go to Control Panel then open Network Connections. with the pda connected you should see something like Local Area Connection #n and when you roll your mouse over it it should pop up and say Windows Mobile Device . open that. click on the properties button on that page. a box should pop up that shows Client for MS Networks, file and Printer sharing, and Internet Protocol (TCP/IP). make sure all three of those boxes are checked. and hit OK. then remove the pda, soft reset it and put it back on the cradle. it should work at this point unless there are other problems.
my friend had to create the connection on his hp with wm5. not sure why but it worked just the same. you could try that and see if it works for you.
edit: i meant to say that when my friend upgraded his hp to wm5 he had to create the connection. hit the new connection button and follow the instructions.
That is SP2 you aare using correct? I'm going to assume yes because ActiveSync won't install unless you are using the latest service pack (at least that's what I understand, I had to upgrade to SP2 before installing ActiveSync).
by any chance are you connected to a laptop thru a port replicator? if so try it directly connected to the usb on the pc itself. what about a firewall?
Here are my 2 cents: I had problems with my Work PC at the University. It seems that ActiveSync makes a TCP network connection via the USB. My Network protections would not allow me to connect. I turned of my Norton, plugges into a different USB port in the back and taa-daa it worked.
PS this was after moving from Windows 2000 to XP pro SP2
I'll try to duplicate this on a work PC, if I can find one, and give you a better summary. It was a while, but take heart -- If I can get it to work it can;t be too hard (or I am very lucky)
Cheers
