There are some trouble shooting guides for the server end available from Microsoft. I would suggest its in the arena of SSL certificates and root vs sub certs that you need to look. http://www.microsoft.com/windowsmobi...messaging.mspx
Note: ISA 2004 is a very good component of the solution, but it is not the only one. If you are running ISA 2000, this could be your prompt to upgrade!
I'm running a single E2K3 server with SP2, and ISA Server 2004 with SP2. All up to date here!
OWA works fine on XP and even on other PDAs. I'll check the troubleshooting guides mentioned Jordan, thanks.
I removed the cert from the Axim, tried to connect to OWA, and it gave me the certificate screen where one has to choose to accept or not. Reinstalled the cert, and that screen went away (as it should).
I'm thinking WM5 does something different than its predecessors.
Folks, I'm having the same exact issue that pgwood described in the first post.
I am an Exchange admin, we have SSL setup on our Exchange 2003 server and it works for OWA, OMA, and Exchange ActiveSync. All three work fine on my Windows Mobile 2003 device, but since I got the x51v yesterday, I've been unable to connect to OWA using the Axim.
I successfully imported the SSL certificate to the Axim. When I connect to OWA, I see the page, even see messages, but am repeatedly prompted for credentials.
OWA is indispensible, I can't use a PDA without it, so I have to get this to work. Anyone have any ideas? As stated, it works on my WM2003 device. Weird.
OK I can now report it's the built in browser that stopping me, I've changed to Minimo (I still cannot load Opera in so if anyone can help on that one I would be greatful ) and I can log on OK no problems.:)
I posted this in another thread, but am putting it here to cover all bases.
If I were a drinking man...I'd CRACK OPEN A BREW !!
I just got it working. Ready for this?
In IIS 6.0 on the webserver where OWA is located, the Exchange and Public folders were set to require a secure channel (SSL) and 128-bit security - so far so good. They were also set to use either Basic or Windows Integrated authentication. I UNCHECKED Windows Int. Auth., stopped/restarted the website, and VOILA !!
I can now use OWA on WM5 on the x51v with certificates/SSL. I can also use OMA and Exchange ActiveSync.
I don't fully understand why it wasn't working with Windows Integrated Auth. checked. I also don't know what the repercussions will be of turning that off. As long as SSL is required, it will be secure, even is using Basic Auth.
I need to dig some more. I'm going to take a guess and say that WM2003 and XP try to use Basic Auth. first, then Windows Int. Auth., and that WH5 does the opposite. Just a guess.
FEELS GOOD to nail this on a Friday afternoon !!
Thanks for the help everyone. I GOOGLED today like crazy for this one!
I am upgrading from an x50v (with a flaky screen) to an x51v. With the movement to WM5, will I loose the ability to connect to my exchange server via activesync/wi-fi? I really like being able to download e-mails from meeting rooms where I have wi-fi access and it would be a bummer to not have this ability with my newer x51v.
ActiveSync 4.1 no longer supports the ability to sync with a PC via wifi. You can cradle the Axim to sync as well as to access the Axim via Windows Explorer for copying files, etc.
The Axim can, however, use Exchange ActiveSync to sync Calendar, Contacts, Tasks, and Inbox. (Not Notes, however). So you can sync those items when connected wirelessly.
Sounds great... so I still use Activesync over wi-fi? It sounds like it will fail when connecting to my PC, but succeed when going to my exchange server?

Microsoft really made this confusing ....
Activesync breaks things down into multiple sync locations. What this means is you can sync your notes with one pc, your documents with another and your emails with exchange ... or everything with one pc ...
So for example - I have my email, contacts, calendar all syncing DIRECTLY to my exchange server. My documents all sync to my local PC. When I am connected to a wifi access point and I press "Sync" - Activesync connects to my Exchange server directly and syncs my email etc. When I put my axim into the cradle and I press "sync" - it connects directly to my Exchange server and syncs email, etc and then separately syncs my docs with the local pc.
Via Wifi there is no way to sync my documents unless I do it manually by connecting to a shared folder on the network and copying the documents to that folder.
Hope that clears things up :)

Ok i think i figured out why everyone has been getting so many errors when trying to connect to secure websites with the built in browser. it has to do with the certs, windows mobile 5 doesnt support intermediate certs. every department of defense website i need to get to with my axim has a intermediate cert and the only certs the axim lets you install are roots. even if you install a cert that is supposed to be a intermediate cert it will be listed as a root and cause an error when you go to access the website. hopefully someone at microsoft is aware and decides to fix it before i grow old and die.
