Worried Oily mark In middle of LCD

Hey guys great forum
I Purchased a new X51V axim not to long ago and it seems fine everywhere except at work were we have kinda bright flourecent lighting here
and its here at work were only I notice this oil on water look on the LCD display right in the middle of the display and only when looking at the display from an angle. If i go outside of work I cant see it , or at home (dont have the lighting there thats here) but I use my ppc alot at work and its extremly annoying is this a hardware issue, has some moisture gotten under the screen? Any one else see this with there axim , and why can I only see it under the lighting at work
Thanks ahead for any thoughts

Aximsitex50icon Oil On Water Look On Axim X51v Lcd

Now that you metion it, I have seen it too. (I just purchased an Axim x51v recnetly.) I have seen simiar effects on other LCD screens, and, since it doesn't seem to affect performance, I merely ignore it. I don't believe anything is wrong with your display.

Nonetheless, I believe the effect is produced by the way an LCD screen is constructed, with two polarizing filters sandwiching a liquid crystal layer. The filters are polarized at 90 degree angles which dictates how much light enters and leaves the display. You only see the effect at certain angles under specific lighting conditions (which tends to support my theory.) I believe what you are actually seeing is the liquid crystals under the upper, polarizing filter.

My concern is not so much with the "oily" appeareance of the display but the fact that the screen itself is made of plastic. Older PDA screens (like those on my old Palm IIIc) were made of glass, and, although less sensitive and more susceptable to breakage, were more resistant to scratching. Agressive use of the stylus will score a plastic screen in no time, degrading character recognition ability and "touch screen" performance. I use clear screen protectors (even on the glass screen), yet I still fear that, over time, the plastic screen will score. However, by that time, the device may be so old as to be passed by techology, and I'll be looking for another handheld anyway.

Hope this info helps.

Best,
DJB

Well no it doesnt affect performance in speed wise but it sure makes it annoying to look at the screen... I almost dont even want to use it when I can see that .. it seemed very apparant this morning when I first came to work. Now about 5 hours later its gotten alot smaller but is still visable.. Im going to do more tests after work to see if this is the only place I notice it happen (being work) or not. Because I cant deal with that if its always going to be like that in a bright environment
