There are many references to folks doing it, I just havent found the link that explains it.
I have been looking for a fix for my wireless issue...Dell has no answer for me. A friend of mine has the 51v as I do and if we sit side by side and match screen for screen they are identical. Yet he can hit the net and I cant. I have an antenna with a halo and 2 arrows at the top and full green bars at the bottom. I have an IP address etc etc. His hits the net and mine says "cannot connect"

RE: Newbie question about 'fake server trick'
Quote:
Hi all.
I have read all about how to do "it" and that most have done "it"
But nowhere can I find WHY everyone does "it" Would someone Pleeeease explain its purpose?????
The fake server trick is intended to stop problems related to ActiveSync running in the background The fake server trick involves creating a definition in the AXIM ActiveSync for a non-existant Exchange server, then deleting it. The details can be found at:

surely you must be kidding ?
:-)
its the single most talked about issue on this forum
This simple process called 'Fake Server Trick' along with ROM update A06 solves all of the issues I had with my X51V. Those being battery drain when off, white screen of death when doing a sync, loss of CF and/or SD, unit not turning on and having to do a soft reset to turn it on. After applying these two things to my unit in January of this year my unit has been rock solid with zero issues.
I had a new X51v in january--wanted to smash it against the wall--couldnt access for 2-3 min after power on, crash, etc. Did server trick to keep AS under control and ROM update, now works perfectly. That doesn't excuse Dell for sending out garbage knowingly and then getting chat support after 40 min to read off of a card and then tell you to hard reset!
To answer your question; ActiveSync continuously tries to find a connection and sync up.... slowing down the axim and using up all the memory causing lockups (white.screen) and other issues.
Creating this "fake server" enables an option that is normally greyed out. This setting adjusts when ActiveSync searches for a pc connection. By setting this option to "manual" it disables ActiveSync from trying to randomly (and constantly) create a connection.
Deleting the "fake server" later won't undo the fix, so deleting it later is harmless. All is left is the fixed settings that solve everything.
As explained by a couple of the posts above, the fake server trick fixes the white screen of death, fast power drain on the battery and (possibly) the failure to 'see' memory cards. It doesn't have anything to do with your connection problems.
Usually, the 'cannot connect error' can be fixed by making sure both dropdown settings in the network settings - Start, Settings, Connections (tab), Connections, Advanced (tab), Select Networks are set to "My Work Network." If you then tap the Edit... button under either list and the Proxy Settings (tab), the top box (This network connects to the Internet) should be checked but leave everything else on this page blank (this is the proxy issue benots4 mentioned). After tapping OK, make sure both dropdown lists are still set to My Work Network and OK your way back to the Today page and then soft reset.

Man, I've had my X51v and love it (it's the latest in a long line of PDA's, and my third Dell). Not sure what's wrong with yours.
If BigCape is looking for a wifi fix. The fake server trick isn't going to help. Your problem as described brings to mind two other fixes.
1) Makes sure the Proxy is not set
2) Make sure Odyse is not on (unless you need it to connect)
And just so it's known, these aren't problems with the Axim X51/v, that need to be fixed, but just regular set-up options that a PDA owner needs to work with (much like you need to know how to use your computer, and it's software).

THANK YOU!!! Nowhere in the manual does it say this!!! It works great now.

If my axim does not do that stuff but on occasion i see Actvesync as a running program in the memory manager, is it a good idea to do it just for the doing or did I get one that this issue was fixed before I bought it?
