Hmm Dissapointed - too many "Were Sorry.." MS screens? on new X51v

HELP PLEASE! (with my spelling it seems) DISAPPOINTED the title should read!!!!!!

I've used a PDA since my Psion LZ64, and I've use Pocket Informant on IAQ's for some years. :approve:

I've a new X51v (the A08 rom ones). and I've reloaded a few programs, including PI (Rev 5 build 574) all onto the 512 SD card.

PI is very unreliable, crashes for no reason, - the Microsoft "were sorry... screen is familiar.

I was expecting things to run a bit faster to be honest, - I've come straight from an IPAQ 4155 and my Aximj is either faulty or just slow.

I'm considering that PI might behave better in BIS rather than a SD card, but is there anyone who can verify that?

I'm a tad dissapointed, - the Axim has had such a good press, - I dont know if I was expecting to much or is that how WM5 is?

I have to either reset the Axim or it closes the program I'm working in about once an hour..... is that right?

Thanks guys, - hope you can restore my faith in this little ******

Are you sure your version of PI is WM5 compatible? There are many X51 users here using PI without a problem. I personally have mine installed to BIS and have had no problems, but I am running WM2003SE. What other software do you have installed?

Thanks for your reply Gigi,

I took the latest PI version off the WebIS site, - there seems to be no mention of a version for each OS.

THe other software:
ListPro
Spb Diary
Spb Pocket Plus
PhatNotes
PhatSpell
Hexacto Pop's Pipe

Everything is on the SD card, except the Apb stuff which insisted in being in BIS.

Any ideas?

A couple of things:

1) Check to see if all your apps are WM5 compatible using this thread:

WM5 compatible software list

2) Apply the fake server trick if you haven't done so already:

Apparently, it helps to stabilize the device.

BTW, there is no such thing as BIS on a WM5 Axim, but you were just asking about internal memory, right?

I use PI every day and have no issues with it. I'ts installed in BIS. WM5 uses flash mem which does slow things down a bit and the VGA display also adds a performance hit. The upside is not having to constantly back up or worry about data loss from a dead battery, worthwhile in my opinion. With the memory restrictions of past devices, I also tried to install everything on SD/CF. With almost 200mb to play with on the X51v, I install everything in BIS and use my 2GB SD and 8GB microdrive for data/maps/movies/music/podcasts.

I did the 'fake server on day one.

I've unloaded all the programs except PI, - which sounds like another thread I read which hinted you had to choose your programs carefully and treat the Axim with kid gloves in case it got upset.

Gig - I had got confused about the X51v and BIS, - I thought all Axims had it. - a bit like Ipaq file store on my 4155.
Is the 'internal memory' RAM that is lost in a hard reset then? or ROM?

Is you PI on a card or in 'internal memory?

Thanks!

Well, on preWM5 Axims, internal memory includes BIS and Main Memory. BIS is akin to file store (I think) on your Ipaq whereas Main Memory was what had a combo of RAM and storage memory and the one that was erased with a loss of power or a hard reset.

With your WM5 device, however, there is just ROM (internal memory) and RAM (only used to run programs). Anything stored in ROM will not be erased following a hard reset or loss of power.

My PI is on BIS (which is similar to internal memory on yours).

I just tried it and yes, it works. I'm running Rev5 Build 568 though. Maybe a reinstall is in order! :)

Thanks for all your help Gigi, - I've uninstalled everything, - and put PI back in internal memory. - will run it a few days to see if it's stable.
