I just recieved a dell axim 51x for fathers day, but i dont know how to connect to my wireless internet in my house. I have a standard wireless connection that you can buy out of any department store. Will bluetooth technology connect to it? It says that it dosnt detect any bluetooth connections. Im having trouble, please help me. I also have plastic inserts on the slots on top of the handheld, Maybe i need to buy a wireless card for one of these slots?
Hm....well it depends on which kind of x51 you were given. I think that the mid-level x51 has Wifi but the low-end does not. I'm going to make the assumption that your Axim came with built in Wifi (if not, you'll need a CF or SD based wifi card, which will go where those wonderful plastic fillers are now).
If you go into the Wirless Settings (Start Menu-->Settings-->Connections Tab), you should see the "Dell WLAN Utility". Select this and turn on the Wifi. If you touch the "Site" tab at the bottom of the screen and select "Rescan" you should get a list of wireless connections. Make sure you see the name of your base station listed. Or you can also just go directly to "Setting" and touch the name of your base station. Or you may have to "Add New..." In there you will have to add the name of your wireless network, as well as the Network key if you have one (You may want to access your wireless router to double check the wireless settings, such as WEP vs WAP encryption, etc). When that is all done, tap and HOLD on the name of your wireless router and choose "Connect" from the menu that pops up.
Of course, all of this info is not useful if your Axim doesn't have built in wireless.
As for Bluetooth, I don't know if this will work....someone may know more if you can share an internet connection from another computer (I think this is possible, but I can't say for certain).
Hopefully this wasn't too confusing, and enjoy the new Axim.

Thanks for the quick reply. I followed your instructions step by step and there isnt a "Dell WLAN Utility". When im at the Settings > Connections tab I see these icons "Beam, Bluetooth, Connections, and network cards. So im wondering if i have the low end handheld? If you beileve that this is the low handheld, tell me so i can buy the wireless card ASAP.
I can't say for certain (since I have the x51v), but it does sound like you have an axim that didn't come with built in wireless. I believe that there are some reviews of wireless cards on this site...try here: http://www.aximsite.com/articles/ind...aycat&catid=21
I have the low end Axim and I use an Ambicom compact flash wifi card with it. The only thing that could have been better is if I had ordered the Axim with wifi. Still the Ambicom is a much faster card.
I think you have tapped on the thing that looks like two triangles one on top of the other like the one that appears above this message - that is the universal bluetooth symbol. Bluetooth is referred to in the US as a radio signal as is wifi but they are separate.
Does your device have a model number? That should help clear up once and for all if you have wifi but it sounds like not.

Hi hswaters,
I'm curious, which Ambicom card are you using? I'm trying to keep track of the cards that work with WM5 (and so far, there don't seem to be many).

It seems that the model number HC03UL was used on the x50 and x51 - I was trying to see if I could lookup the model number and see for certain if you had wifi.
Certainly you should be able to surf via bluetooth and phone - I do this with my Sony Ericsson P910i whenever I don't have wifi available and it works very smoothly.
