USB and new ROM

I had a lot of problems with USB driver errors when I tried this - tried it for ages on my desktop PC at work, and it would lock up on the handshaking screen after it had flashed the updater once (no hard reset - was I worried??). Tried it on laptop at home, same problem, then tried it on desktop at home with sync cable and ac adapter (not cradle) after re-installing activesync and it worked first time, but I was beginning to panic.

i install the upgrade twice the first it doesn't went sucessfully, the 2nd went smooth, you to disable any running program on your pc before upgrade
the first hard reset is really softreset, just hit the continue on the pc (assume go get this far)

I did not close any programs, just put the axim in cradle and started program.
Then follow instructions on screen, update is simple, straightforward
process

I am unable to install this update. I keep getting the error message on the PC, cannot find 'wceusbh.sys'. To the best of my knowledge I have followed all the instructions to the letter.

Does anyone have a cure for this problem, thanks?

Ok, I fixed the error message above by installing Active Sync 4.2 Beta. However, now I am stuck on the Hard Reset problem, halfway through the install.

Well, I went ahead and installed A012 on my x51v successfully. Here are a few things I learned:

1. I had problems with the installation when I used Firefox. I Switched to Explorer and that problem was solved.

2. I took out my SD Card before the installation since others seemed to have had problems with upgrading with the cards left in.

3. I chose to reinstall manually ALL of my programs after the installation rather than using a backup program. Again, others had problems reloading from their backup programs, but I decided to manually reinstall the programs as a way of doing some housekeeping on my Ax. :) (Did I really use all of those programs anyway? :rolling:)

4. I did ALL of my installation with the Ax cradled.

5. Like others, I ignored the FIRST hard reset called for as nothing more than a soft reset. IT IS NOT A HARD RESET--that comes later. You will drive yourself crazy trying to get a hard reset when the first hard reset called for by the installer is in reality a soft reset. Just do the soft reset and keep going. You WILL do the hard reset at the very end of the installation.

6. While some have stated that they were able to do this whole process in 20 minutes, DON'T COUNT ON IT! Do it right, and don't rush!

EVERYTHING is working fine. The biggest difference I have noticed is the speed--a considerable improvement for some of my programs.

If you havn't upgraded yet, I hope all goes well for you. If you run into a problem, don't get frustrated--stick with it, it will be worth it!

Rob

Hmm

Hey guys,

this post is for the people who failed to update to ROM A12 successfully. i was kind of aggrevated by the smart comments from those who updated successfully, so i went to the extreme to find out why i was singled out to fail!!!

i have tried updating more than 8 times and countless unsuccessful hard resets.

i have a dell xps with pc cillin. it seems that there were ports that were blocked and comflicts of software running. to uninstall each software i have and play around with my port routing would be troublesome and too time consuming. the approach i took was reformatted my dell xps and start anew. that was it!!!
after that, it was a breeze. don't install anything after windows xp. just install active sync. you do not have to press enter after the first hard reset. it should recognize automatically and the "continue" button should be available.

to the failures, it is not your fault. don't be feel dumbfounded by the smart alec here.

now, after all that trouble, next week they will introduce A14. crap!!!

Good job. You read and followed the instructions, and shut down all unnecessary programs. Took a rather extreme route in doing it, but success in the end . . . and that's what counts.

PorkRind, I did not mean you. I did not even read your post.

Evidently, most people who have not experience the difficulties others have gone through wouldn't understand. it's true that it is simple to upgrade to A12. the difficult part is your pc system configuration. once that's outta way, it's smooth sailing.

just make sure all software and port blocking devices are disabled.

good luck guys

I agree with porkrind..........I mean seriously.....anybody who jumped on the upgrade that fast is probably the kind of people that don't read instructions. I know I didn't....and I got lucky...mine just happened to work.

After the first hard reset, I took it off the cradle, played with it, cried and complained. Hard reset it like 15 times.....then I just stuck it back on the cradle and it happened to work for me.

I had just happened to be receiving a replacement (for an unrelated issue.) and followed the directions to the letter.
- It was already clean so no hard reset
- Connected as a guest
- Ran the update
- hard reset in cradle
- Continued with upgrade

I have ActiveSync 4.2 Beta....I didn't disable my Zone Alarm which includes Anti Virus and Anti Spyware and Firewall. (I didn't do that either time.)

Maybe I'm just blessed.

I did the upgrade from A06 to A12 at 7:00pm on 7/3/06. I downloaded the X51V upgrade file from the Dell Support site. I also copied the very detailed instructions that are (were) listed further down on the same web page as the download option. After my download was complete I followed those instructions step by step until the ROM update was completed. I have had no problems with the upgrade process or since that process was completed. I have found that my X51V is faster in a soft reset (battery change), application loading, application functioning, wifi connection and functions after connected, large file loading (excess of 24mb in size). I have not lost a SD or CF card in the last 2 1/2 days, no WSOD on cradle syncing, no AS activation that I did not start myself, no battery over heating, no soft reset required to wake my unit up after turning it off. I have not done the 'fake server trick' at this point though I have had the AS icon show up on my units screen but no false activation caused by it. IMHO A12 ROM upgrade is what we should have had when the X51V first came out, but that said I still would have gotten mine last October 2005. My unit now functions with the same speed that my previous iPaq 4155 did and I have all of the advantages of a ROM based function unit. :)

There are some huge variables in how this upgrade is affecting different users that have little to do with the directions. If you have not done so already, please read these threads in detail, I think you will agree that most of these individuals have READ, and RE-READ the directions to the "T".

I think that most of these persons are not being helped with: JUST READ THE DIRECTIONS.
Have you seen the numerous messages requesting information 2 posts down when the information was clearly in the first post?
This indicates to me that some people just don't fully read information that's right in front of them. They may claim to have followed instructions, but may have missed something.
I'm not saying that there aren't certain circumstances where there are indeed issues doing the update however.

The update worked fine for me, I followed the Dell instructions. I *did* need to re-apply the fake server trick, as activesync was launching and slowing things down.

This is my first post. I am waiting for my new
Axim 51v soon. I thank every member in this forum. You have been of great help to me and to the other in understanding the basic and the advanced knowledge beyond using the different Axims.

Anyhow, I agree in putting a sticky for How to Upgrade. The reason is that we should think of the new comers and the newbie. Second I believe if you presented the information in a simple language and in an organized style for everyone to reach it will reduce the threads a lot.

I tend to agree with rfgates that one will get lost in the thread once started and expanded. Many problems has occurred either because of the miss interpretation of the guide or some of the steps are skipped because of the assumption that some of the steps are trivial and easy to understand.

Worked fine.... after i read the instructions

I downloaded the update as soon as it hit the net. "tried" the update, it didn't work, then i read the instructions.....(probably should have done that the first time, but i'm impatient sometimes) and it worked perfectly. however, my RATOC usb host CF card doesn't want to work. but i don't know if that's the update or me breaking it somehow.

Think for a moment about the concept of the flamethrower. Because we have them. And what this indicates to me, it means that at some point, some person said to himself, "Gee, I sure would like to set those people on fire over there. But I'm way to far away to get the job done. If only I had something that would throw flame on them." Well, it might have ended right there, but he mentioned it to his friend. His friend who was good with tools. And about a month later, he was back. "Hey, quite a concept!" WHHOOOOOOOOSSHHH!
