Seriously, that's exactly what I did, and my upgrade went without a hitch. I had no other user experiences to go by at the time, either.
I agree with you, its what I did and had no issues with the upgrade when I did it 3 days ago.

I guess to ensure the smoothest upgrade

1. hard reset your AXIM first, before attempting to upgrade
2. shut down all firewalls on your PC
3. follow the instructions carefully

I just did item 3) and it was fine. And the thought of "removing the PDA" to do the hard reset as prompted never occured to me. I just hard reset it with the PDA on the cradle. I figured the upgrade is not yet complete, it's prudent to keep the PDA connected.

Smooth install

I didn't have any major problems with the upgrade (A06->A12). Although many of the precautions mentioned in this thread are reasonable (who knows how various 3rd party software programs can interact with ActiveSync or the installation program?), I found that I did not need to hard reset before starting the upgrade. I manually reinstalled all of my programs, as recommended in the instructions, rather than trying to restore them from a backup.

I wonder if some people mistakenly think that the upgrade is done after the first reset during the process. I noticed that my Axim seemed "done" with the upgrade at this point, since the Today screen reappeared. Of course, on the PC screen, the instructions were to leave things alone since the upgrade was still in progress. Ultimately, the Axim's memory then got wiped, and the 2nd reset (hard) was called for.

I ended up doing the fake server trick after the upgrade, because I noticed my Axim kept emitting its notification beep every 5 minutes or so (without waking up from suspend). After the fake server trick, no more beeps.

By the way, I have found Aximsite to be a huge help when it comes to tech support, since the Dell website's support is thin, and Microsoft's Windows Mobile homepage is laughable. It's great to see so many people trying to help each other.

Definitly read all and everyword in the directions slowly. Be patient. I think the problem most people are having is that after the first hard reset. Their axim doesn't communicate with the dell software or even activesync. This same thing happend with my ipod last year, this was due to too much crap connected to all 8 of my usb slots. The axim after the first hard reset is recognized by the computer and it has to reinstall the usb drivers and do all the new hardware setup stuff. I little pop up on the bottom right of your screen tells you all this, just like plugging anything else into your usb.

That is why i have my axim connected to my laptop. It's the only thing connected to my laptop. As for software on my laptop, just MS office, Gmail, and Itunes. That's it. That's probably why my install went perfect. Nothing conflicting with axim update software or my axim usb.

My advice. Find an unmolested computer, preferebly a laptop with nothing plugged into it and very little 3rd party software.

It appears that the major reason people are having problems upgrading has nothing to do with the user's fault. It appears the update program won't run properly on some PC's. Trying the update on another PC (preferably one that hasn't had ActiveSync installed on it before) usually fixes the problem.

I followed all the instructions perfectly and couldn't update on my main PC no matter what I tried. I installed AS4.1 on my parent's computer and was able to update without a problem.
