I will be leaving on vacation in couple of days and would like to upgrade my x51v to the new A012 (from A006) before I leave. I have been reading all of the threads written by those of you who have already upgraded and have seen several bits of info that would be helpful to know ahead of time for those of us who have not upgraded yet. However, there is no thread as of yet that is designated for just tips on how to upgrade for those who have not yet, but soon will.
IF YOU HAVE ALREADY UPGRADED SUCCESSFULLY, HOW ABOUT SOME TIPS FOR THOSE OF US WHO ARE GETTING READY TO UPGRADE? THINGS TO DO? NOT DO? ETC.
Until a tutorial or sticky becomes available, this thread could help all of us who need your experience in upgrading--and perhaps sparing us some real headaches in the process. :)
If there is a place to gain such help, AXIMSITE is it! :approve:
That would be the best way to do anything. However, in reading the various posts, not everyone's install went as well as yours. Some spent hours and others were able to do it in 20 minutes--all following the same directions!
However, in reading the posts, I did notice that different PPC and PC configurations produced some very different results--all following the same directions. Let's learn from those varied experiences so that everyone can benefit from the new upgrade with a minimal amount of difficulty.
In other words, if everything went as well by just reading the directions, Aximsite would not have been discovered by most of us!
PorkRind, I'm glad your install went so well. I hope the same is true for the rest of us who have not upgraded yet.
Thanks again to all who are willing to share your help in upgrading!
Seriously, that's exactly what I did, and my upgrade went without a hitch. I had no other user experiences to go by at the time, either.
That is probably not the "spirit" of the thread. You are one of the lucky ones and I am happy for you but reading through the main update thread it seems there are a lot of variable results and "funnies" that occur.
I agree that a "tips" thread would be a good idea until we see a "sticky".
Overall, everthing went well for me (X51). It was my experience, the first Hard Rest was actually a Soft Reset. Others have also experienced that as well. If you do, CONTINUE with the upgrade, the true Hard Reset will come at the end.
Good luck! :approve:
EDIT: A lot of people say you do not need to do the Fake Server Hack with the new upgrade. For whatever reason, AS kept starting on my Axim after the upgrade, so I ended up doing it and everthing seems to be good now.

I think some of you misunderstand the point of my post. My suspicion is that most of those who were unsuccessful in applying this update did not follow the instructions to the letter or misinterpreted the results at one or more of the steps in the upgrade process.
That said, I will admit that the possibility exists that some weird combination of software, host OS and/or hardware problem with either PC or PPC may have caused an installation glitch.
In the end, though, most humans suck at following instructions.
i had no issues whatsoever. everything just went smoothly. i guess i'm one of the lucky ones becasue i've never really had any of the problems i see you guys writing about on here.
Have you read the threads and posts on this upgrade? The last time I looked at one of the threads, it was 25 pages long! I have read most of the posts and threads, and following directions does not seem to be the problem most are having. There are some huge variables in how this upgrade is affecting different users that have little to do with the directions. If you have not done so already, please read these threads in detail, I think you will agree that most of these individuals have READ, and RE-READ the directions to the "T".
I think that most of these persons are not being helped with: JUST READ THE DIRECTIONS. This is one reason why I enjoy the Aximsite so much: There are people who actually are able to help others with the problems they are experiencing without being condescending in the process.
Basically, when it tells you to hard reset DO NOT REMOVE IT FROM THE CRADLE. Try to do the hard reset; it will probably fail. Both times. But the upgrade will work. Then once the upgrade is complete, remove it from the cradle and perform a hard reset. It worked for me.

Thanks all!

When I did my upgrade, there were only a handful of posts in the main thread on the A12 ROM. I've been following it religiously since, and I stand by my assertion: many, if not most of the issues seen there are because either the instructions were not carefully followed or the user misinterpreted what he saw at a given stage of the upgrade and decided that the instructions must be incorrect.
It's also evident that a great many posts in that thread are repeats of the same issues by the same individuals (DemonicAngelz comes to mind as an excellent example) that make the number of problems seen appear to be much greater than those actually experienced.
I'm sorry that you don't find "Read the instructions" to be helpful. It certainly helped me and many, many others attain a successful upgrade.
I failed to do it with my pc but I managed to do it with my friend's Dell laptop. So my advice is :
1) Do a hard reset before ROM upgrade.
2) Delete the partnership and set as guest.
3) Load up the program and just follow the instructions.
4) After initial flash, just do the hard reset, Axim will reboot and Active Sync will detect the PPC. Just set the partnership as guest.
5) At the same time the Dell Update Utility will move on to the next update process, just continue and 2nd flash process will commence.
6) Hard reset again and A12 is done!
Problems faced by me :
-After initial hard reset the Dell Update Utility doesnt proceed to the next flash process. Active Sync does detect my Axim. I ended up pressing enter and can't continue the 2nd flash. Have to exit.
Solution : I have no solution for this problem. I tried updating on my friends laptop and sucessful. So if u guys failed to complete the ROM update, I advise you guys to install on a pc without active sync. Do a fresh Active Sync install, set up guest partnership and do the ROM update. Shouldn't be any problem. Maybe something is wrong with my pc's active sync settings or USB drivers.
+ Disabled all 3rd party Today plugins (Start, Settings, Today)
+ Removed all 3rd part software from the startup folder
+ Cradled device
+ Launched ROM upgrade utility
+ Did the first hard reset while cradled
+ Back on the PC clicked next etc. and waited apprx 10 min. while RAM was cleared and image copied to the device
+ After operation completed, did the 2nd hard reset as instructed while still in the cradle
+ Axim rebooted to a12 and on the PC I was prompted to set up the new partnership. Cancel this since your going to change your device ID more than likely (Start, Settings, System, About)
Thats all and it went smooth. Upgraded from A6. Dont remove from the cradle. I dont think it can be said enough. Also, dont worry if the hard reset screen flashes too quickly. You DONT need to press anything on the 1st reset or the second. Just go with the flow and read whats on your PC screen. Disable firewalls and AV to be safe.
First backup your PIM data - you can restore that stuff without problems after a ROM update. You should also do a complete backup of the entire system in case things get screwed up and you need to reflash back to a previous ROM.
As others already mentioned, do a hard-reset of your PPC. If you want to be absolutely safe, shut down any firewalls, antiviruses, etc. running on your PC, and shut down anything that isn't vital.
Run the file you downloaded from Dell, which will extract the files to the directory you specify. It should run AximUpdate.exe automatically after that, but I had some problems and had to run AximUpdate.exe manually.
Follow the directions. Keep the PPC in the cradle the entire time. You shouldn't need to touch anything on the PPC except for the two buttons to do a hard-reset. As noted in several posts, the first "hard-reset" is actually just a soft-reset, but that's fine since you already hard-reset before doing the update. Either way, it works.
