A12: Noticed several annoyances

After upgrading x51v to A12, I noticed the following three annoyances:
1) If x51v is cradled or connected via USB sync cable, and password protection is enabled, password screen pops up in a short while, no matter what the password (lock) timeout settings are. Mine is set to prompt after 0 minutes of being suspended.
2) Whenever a password screen is up (cradled or not), LCD dims after less than 30 seconds, no matter what the brightness timeout is set for battery power (mine is set for 3 min). It acts like my Nokia phone LCD in a way... Maybe it preserves power, but I would like to be able to control it myself.
3) If the unit is not cradled with Wi-Fi being off, and I perform a soft reset, whenever it comes up, the connection icon (arrows with X) are animated like as if it searching for an access point. At the same time, Wi-Fi indicator is off. The only way to "calm down" this connection icon on the top bar is to turn wi-fi on and then turn it off. This is definitely something annoyingly new.
4) Fake server trick doesn't work -- it always reverts to "on arrival" when you set it to "manual" after the fake server entry is deleted, and I verified that AS wakes up the suspended PDA every 5 min...
5) Battery on the today screen title bar -- this one is easily fixable using instructions in earlier posted link to MS blog.

Other that that, I think it is OK. If anyne has any tips/suggestions on how to address/cope with items 1-4, please reply. Thanks.

More research on this one: I think it all started when I had wi-fi on and soft-reset the unit. With A06, it would have started wi-fi right after finishing the reset, but with A12 it only indicates with the connection icon like as if it is trying to connect, but the wi-fi radio is off (until you explicitely turn it on). Now it acts like this with every soft reset, whether wi-fi is on or off.

I had this with A06 a few times. Never figured out WTH caused it. Worse yet ... using Spb Backup once my device had reset it tended to try to turn on BT for me.

Figured out how to get rid of this symptom: turn wi-fi on when running on battery, wait until it connects, and then ... do nothing and wait until power goes down (reaches inactivity timeout). Then when you turn it back on, wi-fi comes up automatically, and after turning wi-fi off, the unit goes into the sane state (i.e. after soft-resetting the connection icon looks normal -- disconnected).

Hi asbmp1,

I too have the wifi annoyance (i.e., looks like it's connecting when switched off). I tried your suggestion in the above post but couldn't get it to work as you did. Am I missing something from your instructions?

Cheers

Well, actually it (the annoyance) came back after the subsequent soft reset. So it is still a problem. Are you on A12? I never had this with A06.

Here's a weird fix. I just installed the widcomm BT stack over A12 and it fixed the wifi topbar icon behaviour.

Cheers

I think your installs are retarded.

I have an x51v Hardware A01 running A12 and none of these problems.

Activesync saves my changes.
I've soft-reset while connected to activesync on a cradle. Fine.
No wifi problems at all.

#3 - this also happened with A06. Every now and then, after SR, the Wifi connection icon would show and to remove it I did the same as you did. Initially I assumed this was something to do with the Widcomm hack.

#4 - I have to create a real server connection, as I synch to my work Exchange server. After creation of the server definition, I have the "As they arrive" option, but this disappears immediately after the 1st synch, and all I'm left with is the "Manual" and the timed synch options. I've tried to find out how to reapply the "as they arrive" option, since this gives me more flexibility, but haven't found a way yet. This includes removal of the existing partnership and reinstallation of AS4.2. I also synch with my home PC, but I haven't been able to keep the "as they arrive" option there as well. In both cases I have AS4.2, installed on top of AS4.1.

#5 - The best way to show the date and/or time un the top bar is s follows:
How to change the display of the clock in the taskbar:
The clock in the taskbar can be changed to show not only the time, but also the date, or just the date, or nothing at all.
To show nothing:
HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Shell\TBOpt = 0 (DWORD decimal)
To show just the clock:
HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Shell\TBOpt = 1 (DWORD decimal)
To show just the date:
HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Shell\TBOpt = 2 (DWORD decimal)
To show both the date and the clock:
HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Shell\TBOpt = 3 (DWORD decimal)

Note 1: If you switch to the Analog clock display, the date will remain visible -through- the Analog clock
Note 2: Setting the clock to show 'nothing' will still keep the reserved space, showing the taskbar background, and obscure any icons that will shift to the right.
Note 3: Your date may get obscured by the space reserved for the OK/Close button in the top-right. You can fix this my adding spaces at the end of your 'Short Date Format'. See also the tweak on 'Change the Short Date Format'

NOTE:
if the date is showing cropped in the title bar, change the following:
Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\nls\overrides
Change the value of ?SSDte' to the date format :"dd MMM yy '

It is important you add 3 spaces at the end after the yy!!

Hope that somebody finds a way to restore the "as they arrive" option.

3) a06 did it to me as well... my quick fix (before fake server trick and only every once a month or so after) is simply to turn airplane mode off and then on... gets control of the machine back quickly... seems to bring the axim wifi and ms bluetooth ap into sync.

4) i just make a fake server uncheck all sync options, set to manual, leave fake server in there. i tried a12 w/o fake server trick but noticed wifi turning on....seems 'as arrives' is just getting it ready for PUSH (ala exchange2k3SP2)... since i dont connect to a real exchange server it was no problem... if you connect to a real exchange server make sure its running exchange2k3 with SP2 (or above if your corporate and get the fancy microsoft software ;) ) and it should support the push thing... ?might need to have some exchange server settings changed on your exchange profile... to enable push?

5) the reg hack saved my sanity... i was really sick of the bully battery meter that wasnt all that useful anyway... whats is that? its a 2 part meter?? full.. 1/2.. dead?

Oh, the reason I don't experience this is probably that one of the first things I installed was the Widcomm stack (replace very, very crappy A2DP support with only slightly crappy A2DP support). I reccomend doing that anyway, if for nothing else, to get the WirelessPower app.
