Just received new X51V, presently on charger, will follow directions and turn on tomorrow. HW is A03. Chat with Dell said that installation of A12 will render it unusable. Previous poster said recent receipt was A11. If HW is A03, is there a software upgrade that Dell installs as A11, and how do I tell? Disk provided by Dell is labelled for A03, lists AS as version 4.1.
Wish me luck with my new gadget! Love your site, esp Gigi tutorial! Give me a few weeks to study it!
ROM version of WM5 can be seen by pointing to Start > Settings > System > System Information
HW version of you X51V can be seen at the back of your Axim when you take out the battery.

Dell uses the same syntax for just about anything, so you have A03 of the CD.
Even their A12 ROM upgrade on the web is version A02 last time I looked (meaning the upgrade is version A02 resulting in your Axim ROM being A12).
I think they're on version A03 of Michael Dell
BTW ignore ActiveSync on the CD and download the lastest from Microsoft (currently 4.2).
no need to update from A11>A12. its the same rom. A11 is just the version of rom that dell install by default to fresh new units, A12 is a rom update for used axims. If You got axim with A12 so it was a new axim but was in a factory for a while with A06 rom, and dell upgraded to A12.
What's your source for this info? If there's no need for me to upgrade that's going to save *mad* headaches this weekend :approve:
I have HW A02 and upgraded to A12 without any problems! The X51v is faster, more reliable and consistent than my X50v. I had upgraded the X50v to WM and did not have 'problems' just needed to give it more time to tidy itself up. The best improvement on the X51v is its Wifi capability. It connects within 3 seconds and is totally stable. Great machine!
i had the same issues, got a new axim which said AO2 on the back, got myself into a real tizzy thinking i would have to upgrade, finally got up the nerve to do the deed and when i went to install A12 i discover that it was A11 all the time. So its worth checking/ in the device not the rom marked beneath the battery. Now all i have to do is figure out how to sync my contacts, no luck so far.
Since upgrading to A12 I encountered an annoying problem. Each time I change out my battery my X51v will go to a Window Mobile screen and then lockup (I'm careful to make the change out in a few seconds).
I try a soft reset and nothing happens. I do a hard reset and I'm able to restore to factory settings. From there I'm able to restore from my backups. Now not even that works.
Is this something in the internal battery that mucked up when I upgraded from ROM A06?

And ...... Good luck
System Info says A12 on our new Axim X51v shipped with HW A03. Installed AS 4.1 on computer, sync'ed quickly and fine. After a couple of days of playing games and getting used to screens and such (total on time since full charge about an hour), battery is now down to 92%. Apparently battery problems are fixed on new Axims. If I upgrade AS from 4.1 (on CD) to 4.2 (on MS web site) what does that get me?
I don't get Dell support reps saying upgrading to A12 would make the unit unusable. If that were the case, would you still be able to download it? I don't know why, but you can't trust what the reps tell you.
I upgraded to A12 before I knew it was "bad" to do so, lol. My unit is running perfectly, faster than before, quick start-up time, very quick WLAN connection. I'm totally glad I did it!

Well, they didn't remove the WM5 upgrade utility long after they decided that it's not good for the X50, either. They took it off their website only recently. With Dell, we don't really know who to trust.
With the A12 upgrade, it's sink or swim. It might be true that most succeeded in upgrading, but I don't believe that all who failed to upgrade did something wrong.
I have had my X51 with a ROM version AO5 only few months now, is it possible to upgrade to the A12 and if so where can I down load it??? Any help or recommendations would be appreciated!
Thanks
I had my unit on the cradle and it was locked up. So I did a soft reset and when I looked next it was at the screen align screen! Lost everything like a hard boot. I guess it is slightly possible that I was pressing the on/off button but I don't think so.
In the last month, I bought a used X51V unit. I didn't pay attention on hardware version. I made a huge mistake!
On the first day, I saw that the ROM version was A01 and made a upgrade on the ROM to A06 and after this to A12.
Conclusion, I'm having a lot of problems with battery and cards.
My hardware version is A00 and I want to do a hard reset and after reinstall the rom.
My question is:
What I have to do?
What do you think? I have to reinstall the ROM A04, after A06 and for last the A12 version.
Is it a solution for me?
Thanks in advanced for any sugestion.

As far as I know you cannot just do a re-install of the old ROM's using the regular loader. You might be able to force it somehow but I would suggest that before you do that, do a hard reset and then don't install anything for a day and see if your battery and card issues are gone. And if you did a restore after you did the upgrade I would not do that but install your programs one at a time to see if one of them is causing your problems. there have been some complaints of battery drain (me included) but it was pretty much solved by doing a hard reset after the upgrade was complete. That is to say after the hard resets that you are supposed to do for the install, then do another.
