Ghost a PDA

Is there a way to "ghost" (as in make a copy of) a PDA?

Just use SPB Backup or Sprite Backup and make a backup. You can copy that backup file to a different (identical) PDA and restore.

Thanks, but what I wanted to know was not about a backup program but a "Ghost"

Often after doing a rom upgrade the backups don't work corectly.
Ghost works differently.

I think what you are referring to is a complete backup of the ROM and EVERYTHING.

Norton Ghost (for those of you that do not know) is a backup file system that Dell, HP, Compaq use. It takes a "snapshot" of the system exactly and outputs it to a file (a big one depending). It automatically resizes partitions, software, drivers, games, etc. to state that was in.

And to answer your question to my best ability, I would say no.

There are ways to both backup and/or a ROM portion (I think) and ways to backup the software that is loaded. But I don't think there is a way to completely backup EVERYTHING. The ROM is read-only unless you flash. So unless you screw up the ROM you'll be ok. With PDA's all you need is a software backup of files and programs that the end user (you) install.

Performing a hardreset takes everything back to defaults, so why would you want to continually erase the Default ROM and reload it everytime. It would a lot easier and faster to just HardReset (HR) and restore a few files and programs.

This way of course, you couldn't take a x51v flash and put it on an HP or something. I know ghost is very notorious for being complete and fast but with PDA's your dealing with memory... so the process is already fast... plus the available space is ALOT less verses Gigs of Harddrive storage.

Take a peek at what is going on with the latest A12 rom update and you will see why I want to be able to go back.
Also, ghost is the easiest and most complete way to backup. I would be nice if there was such an option.

As far as I know, there's no way to make a backup of the OS and the user data together, however when you update the ROM, it should give you the option to save a backup of the existing ROM.

Both SPB and Sprite have 'Clone' products which should be the closest equivalent to ghosting. Last I'm aware of, both do not yet have a version available for WM5, but I believe Sprite is due to have one out very soon. For non-WM5 look at:

The ROM from Dell is effectively the "Ghost" image that they have built.
So producing this image is not a problem, the tools must be available.
The problems are:
- Getting that Ghost image from any particualar PDA (probably not possible. I suspect that the ROM is built using Visual Studio or similar, is down-loaded to a device to test it, and if it works it is then built into a ROM for all devices).
- Getting a Ghost image onto any device. This is where people are having the problems in the upgrade to A12. The ROM is OK, but the process to get a clean installation of it onto your device seems to be 98% not 100% effective.
