Here's the scoop; my original X51v would not hard-reset no matter what I did, including putting a hard-reset program on the device. I got a refurbished device in the mail as a replacement due to it crashing and it was capable of hard-resetting, but the case was blemished. I another replacement device in the mail today and it is perfect with the exception it can't hard-reset either.
I am making sure I push in the stylus and press the power button at the same time, but the hard-reset screen just flashes on by! What the hell is going on! I haven't even put one piece of data on the PDA yet, either.
I am trying to upgrade the PDA from A06 to A12 and it won't do it because of not being able to hard-reset. I do get the Dell logo screen, but I am sure all it is doing is soft-resetting.
My second device that hard-resetted properly was able to be updated to A12, but I will not keep it due to the large scratch in the silver painted section of the paint.
ROM Upgrade to A12 Hard Reset Solved by update of ActiveSynd
Had exactly the same problem, and Dell did the same thing with me. Dell replaced with a refurb unit. After I finished talking with Tech support and they arranged to send me a new unit, I tried one more thing to get the unit to update itself. What I found out was my ActiveSync was version 4.0. I updated to ActiveSync 4.2 and tried the process again, and all went well. Although the unit skipped through the Hard Reset Screen, it did finish the update process and I am happily upgraded to version A12. I am sending the refurb unit back to Dell with a note that a possible solution is update of ActiveSync to 4.2.
Hope this helps you and maybe others in the same situation.

Tried upgrading to AS 4.2 and tried to upgrade with the refirb unit Dell sent.
I have two units that will not hard reset now.
Dell tech support is pretty clueless. They offered to send me a new unit but couldnt guarantee it would have A12 on it. They made it sound like they were doing me a great big favor cause the A12 is an "upgrade". I told them if was a big deal then why is it free on their site? I really dont care how I get the new OS just as long as I get it. So they are sending me another unit and putting in their "notes" to please send one with A12. So we'll see.......
If all these folks are having problems upgrading why do they act like "wow! this is news to me"?
Hi, I tried the hard reset, but it only did a soft reset, then just continue the process of update, and after it finishes you will have the A12 update installed and the hard reset will work again.

Simple like that!
Like I said above, That is the way it works! just keep going.
I have exactly the same problem. What do you mean BIGDAVE240, continue the process of upgrading? I thought that was it after you did the hard reset it would show as A12? I keep re-programming the flash, and it upgrades really quickly, like it has already been re-flashed. But every time I reset, that screen just flies by. What else is there to do in the continue upgrade procedure? I upgraded to the latest version of ActiveSync and that made no difference. Hope someone can help! I NEED that upgrade!
I have a refurb x51v and i can't do a hard reset at all, just like the OP. I on the other hand am not trying to upgrade to A12 rom, all I want to do is a hard reset and it just skips by the screen.

That's really frustrating. I don't know how to resolve this issue but I would suggest you try using a software as a work around. Hope it works. http://www.phm.lu/Products/PocketPC/TaskMgr/
Once you have started the process of upgrading to a12 you can't do a regular hard reset again until you complete the process. This is because the first part of the process puts files on the machine and they are activated whenever you try to hard reset. As Big Dave has said several times in this thread, the update is a two step process. The first hard reset actually soft resets the machine and sets it up to install the ROM. If the machine is still connected after the first hard reset and the upgrade process is still running on the PC then you should see a dialog on the PC which tells you to continue the upgrade. In order for the process to continue you have to click the 'continue' button on the PC.
I know all this because like others here I thought my x51v was defective because I could not do the hard reset. Dell even sent me another machine which had the same 'defect'. Only after doing some searching here was I able to get the update to run.
After you do the 'hard reset' where it doesn't allow you to press either button, it is NOT finished doing the actual flash.
Place the device back in the cradle, and watch it continue to flash. There's still 15 - 20 minutes left for it to complete.
Close but whatever you do DO NOT REMOVE THE PDA FROM THE CRADLE DURING THE UPDATE PROCESS! just turn it to hit the hard reset without removing it from the cradle. Duke_Box has a good list of exactly what to do and there is also this one here: http://www.aximsite.com/boards/showthread.php?t=131684
Even if you remove it, you can put it back in the cradle to continue the flash process. I flashed it to A12 twice (to try to resolve another issue) doing this and it was fine.
