Big Smile A12 Upgrade Hung Up - Problem Solved

I experienced the same problems that many have had with the upgrade of their X51v units when updating their ROM to version A12. When I updated, and immediately following the request to Hard Reset, the screen went back to the normal starting screen and the time was reset. There was no update of the ROM and my unit would no longer ActiveSync.
Talked with Dell Tech Support and they arranged for a replacement unit (refurb). After I finished talking with Tech support and they arranged to send me a new unit, I tried one more thing to get the unit to update itself. What I found out was my ActiveSync was version 4.0. I updated to ActiveSync 4.2 and tried the process again (leaving the unit in the cradle during hard reset), and all went well. Although the unit skipped through the Hard Reset Screen, it did finish the update process and I am happily upgraded to version A12. I am sending the refurb unit back to Dell with a note that a possible solution is update of ActiveSync to 4.2.
Hope this helps you and maybe others in the same situation.

I am excited that yours worked. Unfortunately, I had the same problem as you. I received a refurb replacement and had the same problem with it as well. Read your thread - upgraded Activesyn to 4.2 but both units still behave the same way. Dell now sending another replacement with A12 preinstalled. BTW, Dell rep told me that they recommend downgrading to A06 and that they no longer recommend people upgrade to A12.

That doesn't make sense. If they don't RECOMMEND A12... then why are they shipping you one with A12 preinstalled?

Those dell reps just tell you want you want to hear. Plus those guys aren't even tech savvy half the time, they just read the prompts. Think logically. All Dell Axims are coming with A12 preinstalled now... so do you think they would be shipping out A12 if they don't recommend it?

A12 is great if you install it right.

I agree with you totally. In fact, my unit came with A11 installed. Worked fine, but I wanted the newer and now have all the problems. When they suggested going to A06; I told them I had A11 and didn't want to go "backwards. Their reply was that A11 didn't exist. When I sent an image of my system information screen they admitted it existed just not in a download form - only factory installed. So I agree, they are saying whatever they want to try to get rid of you.
