I have been having a problem here on campus with my x51v that has been driving me nuts. I want to blame the Axim because laptops can connect with no issues.
Using the Dell WLAN Utility, I will see about 5-12 access points to the same campus name. It tries to connect, but ends up failing and reports that it is unable to get an IP (or says nothing at all but shows the 'wireless enabled but not connected' icon).
It also has no trouble connecting to single access points (homes routers and classrooms with unique SSIDs). Conencting to the same network in the housing part of campus where there is just one weak access point connects and associates fine. I am not sure if they are using different equipment here or the problem is solved because I'm only seeing a single access point.
Changing the power savings mode makes no difference. Odyssey client does not seem to work any better (although I've never used it, am not super familiar with it).
Has anyone had a similar problem? I think the wireless routers around campus are Cisco.
For campus APs, check with your IT deparement - they might be using some sort of RADIUS-based authentication like LEAP. Cisco networks can be set up in so many different ways, so it could be "main" campus APs are setup different. it may have somhing to do with how they have CCKM, WDS and Fast Roaming set up as well..
If I understand the 'fixes' in the WiFi upgrade, it should directly address the problem of the OP.

No, it still does not connect any differently after installing the CAB. What happens (with or without the patch) is that it tries to connect for about a minute or two, then pops up a box, "Unable to obtain a server-assigned IP address. Try again later or enter an IP address in Network settings."
I would assume it's running in B or B/G mixed, since a lot of people still have laptops that only support B.
There is little authentication to speak of. You register your MAC address and whatnot through an online system and you can then connect any time. There's no WEP or WPA or whatever. I know I am authenticated with whatever that is since I can access wireless from the residences (it's the same authentication for both).
On a side note, odyssey seems to work but I can't actually connect to any internet things. Does anyone actually use Odyssey successfully? Are there quirks to how to use it, or should it just work?

I use odyssey and it works fine. Once You use it, you find you have to use It. It is easy to set Up but you have to empty caches and clean up stray files. Soft reset is a must.
If I understand you correctly, your axim will see lots of access points, and in theory can connect to the ap's. But it can't get an ip, correct? If that's the case, KRHAINOS may right about the roaming, especially if there's nothing more than mac filtering for security. I've had issues with roaming in campuses and hospitals as well. If nothing else fixes it, you may need to see what your axim is doing. Download a wireless client sniffer to see what your axim is actually doing. You can also use Ekahau, which measures signal strength, and graphs each access point for you. I would start there. Also, Wififofum is a good app for the axim to measure how well the axim sees the access points. If all else fails, the cisco ap's may not be putting out their max power. You could always hack some of them and bump up the power. But you didn't hear that from me.
I also used to have this problem with my x51v. I think this may be some kind of incompatibility between the PDA and the AP. I suspect that the timeout (in the axim) for receiving the DHCP response from the AP is too short. I tried vxipconfig (freely downloadable at http://www.cam.com/vxipconfig.html) and in most cases this solves the problem. Just press on the "Renew" button a few times, and voila...
If you do not succeed, try to remove the settings for the given network at the Dell WLAN utility, and soft reset.
@ TerryVi: the update appears to only be for A00 and A02 rom versions, or am I mising something?

I'm not sure how u are trying to connect, but I was recently at a large inner city hospital, I had about 20+ APs showing up. If I selected one in Odyssey and set it up an d click connect, I wasn't able to connect, but when I selected the <any> option it worked fine. I've always assumed 'any' would only cycle through connections that were in the list, now I'm not so sure.
