disassembly

You'll need two screwdrivers: a Torx 5 (T5) and a very small Philips. The Torx 5 is for the screws under the rubber feet, and the Phillips screwdriver is for the tiny screws inside your device.

Basically, you unscrew the T5 screws and gently pry the back of your unit away from the front. If you want to disassemble it further, for example to remove your screen, you'll need to unscrew the tiny Phillips screws on the back that hold some things on to the circuit board.

It's not difficult, but do it at a place and time where and when you have no distractions and enough time to take it slowly if something goes wrong. I'm impatient, so sometimes I think, 'I have a free hour.. let's try taking this apart...' I've been taking apart and putting together PC's for years, but disassembling my X51v was a new experience. I suppose that ones perspective changes when one takes something apart for the first time.

They should teach this sort of thing in high school, instead of dissecting animals :-) Then people won't just throw things away when they have trouble working.

there is a very nice video (for download) demonstrating the opening and closing of the axim X51v, somewhere here in the forum. Try searching for it.

Not to be critical, but I'd be careful with the word 'pry'.

Another way to describe that part might be the following:

Once all 4 torx screws are removed, use a fingernail (perhaps thumb, or index finger) and move / slide up and down along the natural separation point on both sides. Start by using this motion along the top of the unit where the SD and CF slots are. It is a natural starting point. Then move to the lateral separation points.

You will notice (on each side) 3 clip points that help secure the bottom and top unit together. Sliding your fingernail along this line will gently separate the 'shells'.

BY ALL MEANS.....DO NOT USE A FLATHEAD SCREWDRIVER TO TRY AND SEPARATE THE SHELLS. IT WILL CERTAINLY LEAD TO UNECESSARY SCARS.

That's just my thought.

You're right about the word 'pry'. It's too forceful a description for what actually needs to be done, which is why I modified it with 'gently'. Even so, your description is better. The person who shipped my LCD+touchscreen to me sent a small plastic device that fits nicely into the slot and gently parts the front from the back.

In any case, I installed my new screen a few days ago. It took maybe 15 minutes, and was quite easy. I've heard reports of people buying screens from Ebay whose performance deteriorated within a couple weeks after installation, so I'm suspending absolute judgement, but so far it seems like new.
