Dell sent me a refurbished x51v to replace my original unit because the battery wouldn't charge. Now, this unit doesn't seem to hold a charge for any period of time when the battery is switched out. Isn't there a capacitor that holds a residual charge for this case? I don't remember my original 51v doing this. I know it doesn't have the backup battery like the earlier models did. I just don't remember the unit resetting itself back to the original oS date before. When I reset the date and time on my unit, all of the information is still intact so I haven't lost anything. It's just kind of a pain since lately, I've had to do alot of battery swapping between my extended battery and my standard battery. Both are Dell original batteries, not after market.
Send it back. The on-board capacitor should hold a charge to keep the time and date up to date, at least for several minutes. Mine can hold a charge more than ten.
Now, my problem is that I have some items on my PDA right now that I need to be able to transfer over but I don't have the information readily at hand. Things like a couple WiFi settings for some areas that require logging in. The IT service areas would require me to send the unit back off for a week or more to "reinstall" the access features and that would be downtime I cannot afford at the moment. Is there a program or way that I can copy this information and tranfer it over to the other unit when I get it?

You should be able to do a full system and data backup using Sprite or SPB backup. Backup usually works best with same ROM versions (eg. A12 to A12). Some people do report problems moving a backup from one rom version to another while some claim to have success with it. If I understand it correctly, Dell would send you a unit first before they ask you to send yours back. You can first restore your backup on the new unit so you can check if everything works out before you send your old Axim back. Or you can send your new one to your IP department and wait for them to configure it and send it back to you before sending your old one to Dell. That way you can minimize your downtime. Good luck.
Mine does the same, when I remove the battery but is saves all of the data.. I' happened after it went out of warrenty so unless it's causing serious issues don't worry about it...
I have the exact problem with my x51v, my only solution was to install sp timesync (atomic time sync program) so I could at least reset the time quickly (as long as I'm near a wifi hotspot or home
I have the same problem. Purchased through eBay. I have only had it a few days, and that seems to be the only problem. Since I cannot get it repaired under warranty, I will have to pursue other options. Any suggestions on where to send it for repair of this capacitor problem? Any idea of what I am looking at for costs? I live in Canada, but I have no problem shipping to the US.
My X51v just started doing the same thing. When I change batteries, it acts as if I just did a soft reset as it boots slow and to the Dell splash screen. Then it operates fine except for the date and time needing reset.
I bought the extended warranty with advanced exchange, so I should be covered. Guess I will wind up with a refurbished one. :(
You can use sprite backup to backup your current settings. Then install sprite backup on your replacement & copy the backup file. The replacement should mirror the old unit.
Note: This will only work if both have the same rom version.
