I have the same problem too - been happening for a while. The WiFi isn't actually on, but the icon is stuck in the "searching" mode. Turning WiFi on then off works. I don't have any weather programs or anything that should be updating. I've basically given up trying to figure it out (well, until now, when I saw this thread).

I guess for those of us who are having this problem, we have to figure it out to solve it and share it here.....
Same happened to mine. I only installed Resco Explorer, Resco Photo Viewer, Skype, TCPMP. No Weather, no Avantgo. After it search for a while, I noticed that ActiveSync shows in the memory. What a crap!
Hi all, why is it that everytime when I do a soft reset to my unit, the wireless network icon seems to be searching for a wifi network?
I have checked, the wifi is not turned ON.
Help....
Same Problem; no long term fix. It is very random for me; not after every soft reset, but most. I've tried everything short of a hard re-set to resolve this. I'm convinced it is a hardware/OS compatability issue that needs a ROM update to fix it. Please post if you find a solution.
I've noticed the same problem, but mine hangs up completely when this happens, with an x50v running the A02 Rom and WM5 it was running smooth after the ROM update, then ActiveSync acted up on me, since then intermittent issue on soft resets.
I was able to get into safe mode using Pocket Plus and it said that flight-mode was turned on, so I turned it off, and it went away. However upon booting into normal mode the problem persists.
I cleared the problem once with a hard-reset/cancel as the soft-resets did nothing.. however this time.. its an x50v brick with a nice bright LCD running a picture of what WM5 looks like without any todays plugins loaded and frozen, hahaha.
I'll probably hard reset it tomorrow and go back to WM2003SE, so much for my second oddessey into WM5.. the dell WM5 CD is going back into cd wallet storage.
I've had this problem for months and months and have been just living with it- it's finally getting on my nerves. I plug my x51v into my PC each evening to sync and charge it via the USB to PC cable (this problem also happens with the Dell dock). At some point in the evening (the only time I notice this happening- never happens during the day), after a couple hours of being connected to my PC, my x51v will lock up- no touch or button response at all. I have to soft reset and then reconnect to my PC. Nine times out of ten when this happens, the wireless symbol appears it is trying to connect and the power button is flashing green like I turned on the wireless, except I didn't. I'm guessing some program is doing this, but I have no idea, since it's been doing it for it seems, forever. And if it's just the wireless coming on, then why would that alone cause a total lock up?
Any ideas what could be causing this? I have SKTools installed. Is there any way I could utilize it to discover what is causing this? I'm still trying to learn all SKTools can do and am not that familiar with it yet.

Not sure what ROM version your using but that would be my first review. Make sure your unit is at A12 dell release. If it is then I would to a hard reset and reload the applications you have. Make sure you do a backup as a hard reset will bring your unit back to its original ROM settings with out any of your data or applications installed.
I think (because this kind of things happened to me) that Window (or a software) whant to do something in a particular moment (that explain why you have this problem on the evening)
To check that see you're notification queue (and sktools can do that, but, I, personnaly prefer Memmaid for doing that (but for the rest SKtools is much better)
You can delete the notification i find "suspect" (BACKUP BEFORE!)
Better idea: hard reset: a clean system is alway stabler
Best idea: have you ever think about a new wm6.1 rom ? I do: never ever have to reboot!
Hope i help you (and hope haven't done to much english mistakes)
A hard rest is pretty drastic at this point. I'd check your wireless settings to determine if your PDA is setup to automatically search for an access point. You may also want to search thru the Wireless threads.
I don't have the built in WiFi. However, when I have my WiFi card plugged in it will keep searching. If I don't get sync'd up it will eventually lockup. I'm assuming it runs out of memory.

It almost sounds like there's an application on your pocket pc that is trying to gain access to the internet so it can be updated. If that's what is happening and if you don't have the ActiveSync internet passthrough option set up properly, the pocket pc could be attempting to connect via WIFI connection.

That's a good point Julie. I have both weather and news feeds on mine. That's probably what's locking mine up. Fortunately, I don't have the WiFi card in all the time.

I don't think it's the dock as I don't even use it any more (the problem did occur with the dock) since I'm using the USB to pc cord from the Belkin 3-in-1 travel kit specifically since I didn't want to use the dock anymore. The problem does still occur with the USB cable as well- this is all in my original post.

If you look at my info in the left column it says "PDA: x51v A12" which is actually what my PDA is. The only info I don't have there is WM5, but I think the A12 rom is WM5.:) I actually think it is very ill advised to suggest a hard reset when this is just a nuisance- somewhat akin to suggesting reformat of my pc hard drive because it locks up daily. There are usually many more options before a hard reset would be required. If my device were completely inoperable, then yeah, I might have to do a hard reset, but definitely not going to do one for this problem. But thanks for the reply!

That's what it sounds like to me, Julie. The only thing I can't figure out is if this is what is happening, then why would my device lock up? It doesn't lock up when I actually turn on my wireless to connect to my router. I can surf the internet on my PDA with it connected to my pc through AS, so I'm guessing I have the internet passthrough set up OK.
I might add that I don't have any RSS feeds or anything that I know of that requires an update or is set that way, but I'll do some more digging. On a side note, I never actually see the wireless icon in the top bar lit up or the flashing power button until after I do the soft reset. This doesn't occur if I just do a soft reset at other times or when I do a backup with Sprite Backup which requires 2 or 3 soft resets performed automatically by the program during the process of the backup. The problem also doesn't occur at the same time in the evenings- it's not like I can pinpoint a certain time each evening, since it's not consistent. I may just have to live with it- I have been for so long, I'm pretty used to it.
