Another thing to add to this. I do manual daily backups of my PDA using Sprite Backup 6.1 (just checked and there is a 6.2.1 out now- need to install it) and don't trust the automatic backup feature. As I was doing the manual backup tonight, the wireless icon appeared in the top bar. My backup usually takes around 2 - 3 minutes. With the wireless icon showing it took over 10 minutes, but finally did complete- no lockups. This is the first time I have noticed this happening. My PDA was not connected to my pc, so I guess that has nothing to do with it either. While the backup is in progress there isn't supposed to be anything else running at all, which is why Sprite automatically does the soft reset prior to the backup.
Now I really don't have any idea what is going on.

I added two of the sample "programs" that came with SKScheMa: one to turn off BT and the other to turn off WiFi, into the StartUp list on my X51V. They are both off unless I explicitly turn them on now.

Have you checked whether or not you've ticked the 'allow wireless data connections from my mobile device whilst docked'?
That might be the source of your issues...
I'm not really sure where you are referring to for this setting. If you mean in AS, I don't have that option in AS 4.2 and won't install 4.5 since 4.2 has been working fine daily for a year and a half. But in my last post, I pretty much debunked anything to do with the AS connection, since it happened while not even connected to my PC.

When you go into activesync, choose 'file -> connection settings'. There should be a tick box at the bottom labelled 'allow wireless connections on device when connected to the desktop'.
That'll allow the pda to use wifi whilst syncing and connected.
Happening whilst not connected, you're right, it does kinda eliminate the option of it being AS related.

That's where I looked and I don't have that option.
I have:
1. Show status icon in taskbar (unchecked)
2. Allow USB connections (checked)
3. Allow connections to one of the following (COM1 or COM3 in a dropdown menu) (unchecked)
4. This computer is connected to: "The Internet"
5. Open Active Sync when my device connects (checked)
What version of AS are you looking at?

Have you installed a task manager to your pocket pc? If so, it would be interesting to see what processes are running when you notice WIFI flickering on automatically like that.

I have iLauncher & SKTools, but iL never shows anything running when the wifi is flickering. I'll have to see if I can find anything running with SKTools.

Try PHM Task Manager. Install it to your Pocket PC, then soft reset the device. Open up PHM Task Manager and make a note of the items that are running. Then turn off the Pocket PC and wait until you see the flicker. Then check out PHM Task Manager and see if there's anything new there....sort of like turning on the lights real quick to catch the goblins in their mischief. ;)

Well, the problem stopped as of last Saturday, April 26, 2008. Could this have something to do with Daylight Savings Time? I installed the patches and have had no problem at all with my x51v since then, i.e. the time has always been correct since last fall. I haven't had one single lock up while connected to my pc since last Saturday and I leave it connected for several hours each evening while working on my pc.
Also, apparently it wasn't actually the wifi that was coming on automatically, but was the flight mode, since it would never connect to my router. If I opened the WLAN Utility and tapped "Turn On", and then tapped "Turn Off", the symbol (looks like the wireless icon flashing) in the top bar would disappear. If I then turn the WLAN back on, it would then connect to my router like normal.
Did DST used to be the last Saturday in April at some point? If so, then what would that have to do with the flight mode coming on automatically during the entire winter? This has been happening since last fall some time- I don't recall exactly when.

Might be too late to post a second solution. Actually it was suggested already in the thread but wanted to confirm that it could work in certain cases:
I didn't have the "automatic wireless on" problem on my x51v, but noticed it on my aunt's x51v. Checked all the start-up files (not different than mine), checked running programs with the suggested task manager (loaded on both, not different than mine), and aunt doesn't have any third-party software that I don't have. Neither of us have the weather updating or avantgo. I know that I did the fake server trick to my PDA but am pretty sure aunt doesn't know it, so did it to her PDA (in brief - google for explicit instructions: opened activesync, added new (fake) server, set schedule to "Manual" for both options, closed activesync, reset, erased fake server, reset again). So far, no crazy searching upon turning aunt's PDA on.
No, FST is not the solution. I have used Fake Server Trick shortly after the X51's first came out, and I always have the intermittant WiFi searching icon problem after soft reset.
From what I have seen it appears to be some sort of software incompatiblity with WM5. I do not see the problem shortly after a hard reset (and I have done a few over the years). The issue will appear sometime later after I have reloaded some of my third-party applications.
Well, it worked for me, but then again, I figured it wouldn't work for all cases (which is why I wrote "in certain cases"). Sorry you can't use that trick. I guess it worked for me 'cause I don't have the third party software that you do/that's mucking it up? What did you do in the end to stop it (or have you given up on it)?
I did the fake server trick right after I got my PDA (about 1 1/2 years ago), so that didn't work on mine either. Mine started doing this sometime last fall. Also, mine seems to have the problem mostly when connected to my PC, not necessarily just right after a soft reset, although it happens then sometimes as well. When the flight mode comes on, my PDA locks up and I have to soft reset. Sometimes after the soft reset, it is still in flight mode and sometimes not. Turning on and off wifi takes care of it.
I'd love to nail down exactly what is causing this so we can take care of the cause and not just bandage it by running a script.

Reason: To make sense after merged threads
Here is the list taken from SKTools, of programs I installed around the time this issue started with my x51v (I have lots more installed before and after, but to save space only included those which I installed about when this problem started). Does anyone have any of these programs installed? If we can find a common denominator, then maybe we can figure out exactly what is causing the flight mode to come on on it's own.
