I have the the same problem. The problem appered recently, few days ago. Before that never had it. Before soft reset i have my wifi switched off. And it stays off after soft reset, but the icon on top shows searching for network. The only way to stop it - swithc wireless on and then off again.
I have this problem not with each soft reset. Sometimes it's ok.
What software you have installed? I suspect that my problem started after I installed some new soft. It may be SPB GPRS monitor or SPB weather. I noticed, that the problem always occurs after I did weather update using WIFI. But i always switch WIFI, then close all running apps, then do soft reset.
Also another thougt that it could be sort of virus. Not sure if there any viruses exist for WM5, but who knows.
This happens to me as well. I suspect it is a weather problem updating that causes it. I have pocket weather. I have not had the time to be systematic about when it happens or what I do when it doesn't happen. (Maybe Santa will bring me some more time this Christmas!!)
There have been several threads mentioning this problems - again I haven't [edit] gathered them all together to see the common threads, but it's either a huge bug or something we are all doing. Alist of programs running and what hardware/ROM base is probably a good place to start.

Isn't that just the general network connection icon. Mine (when not using Wisbar) shows up because something is trying to connect (be it ActiveSync, a today plugin, etc.) I don't think it really has anything to do with wifi specifically. If you look at the bottom tray icon, for the real wireless app, that should tell you if the wifi radio is on (that and the blinking green light as stated before).
The bottom tray icon tells that radio is off. No other connection is active - axim is not in cradle, bluetooth is off. ActiveSync is not in the running programs list. Actually, running programs list is empty. But there are a lot of processes running I beleive: today plugins, gprs monitor, sk menu, etc. Some of processes either trying to connect or just diplaying wrong connection icon.
I've noticed I have had this problem occassionally. Here are the tests that I have done.
If, after a soft reset, the icon is acting like it is searching for a network, I tap the wireless icon, turn it on, then turn it right off. This usually stops the search.
I then did another soft reset just to see if I could repeat the problem. It didn't happen that time, no searching. But 3 days later for no apparrent reason, after a soft reset, the icon is doing the search thing.
It's almost like flight mode is getting turned on after a softreset when it should not be turned on.
Urggghhh!!! often activesync is on (using ilauncher to check) even though activesync doesn't use wifi in WM5. Using Pocket Weather, although I have been very good about turning off wifi when I power off. I use BT for sync'ing and don't often have BT and wifi on at the same time. There is no common pattern of use but I can say that it is not just the wireless icon showing that it is trying to connect. The tray wifi is sometimes on, even though it is white and I am not connected to any network. Again turning the wifi off using the wlan utility cures the problem. but inquiring minds want to know -- Why is this happening?
If you're referring to the icon at the top of the screen, it's not the wireless icon. That's just a general connectivity thing (maybe representing the actual Connection Manager). To isolate the issue, I'd try removing all today screen items, disable/uninstall any programs that run at startup (PocketPlus, any alarm fixing type things, etc.) and add things back one at a time until you find the problem. All in all I find it more annoying than disturbing. (I don't know, maybe doing the fake server trick will help, too.)
I experience the same thing on occasion, and use the same "fix" mentioned--power wifi search on and then off again. Like ^^ said, I find it more annoying than anything else, and haven't really worried about it too much. (Only "aftermarket programs on mine are MagicButton, Opera, IM+, AirScanner, and AvanGo).

For me it is the wifi LED and 90% of the time, the wifi radio is actually on. The common thread seems to be a program that wants to sync - weather, avantgo. it still doesn't make sense to me.
