Worried Once upon a time, everything went wrong. Help, oh help this clueless one.

They say that one should leave well enough alone. Mr. Einstein also pointed out that only two things are infinite-- the universe and human stupidity.

Now, why I didn't think of that before I started messing with my Axim today is beyond me. Darn it, I think that I just might be a rebel at heart looking for some excitement in my life.

So this is what happened. I don't know if this long recount of today's adventure is necessary, because here's my problem: when I try place my Ax on its cradle now, a message comes up--- "USB Device Not Recognized. One of the USB devices attached to this computer has malfunctioned, and Windows does not recognize it"

And I don't know what's wrong. But to try to make some sense of how I went from Content-Girl-With-Perfecty-Functioning-PPC to Overly-Distraught-and-Clueless-Wreck in just 1 hour, let me describe what I inflicted on my Axim to get here in the first place.

Here goes......

So thinking that it would be wise to backup my data, and thinking that I would give Dell the benefit of the doubt before purchasing a 3rd party application, I decided to try out the data backup app that came on my Axim. So, I ran the backup.

Then I tried to do a restore. After it was finished, I soft reset it, and nothing happened. Like my Axim just died. The lovely bright blue startup "Dell" screen would come up, but then, it would go dim and become completely unresponsive. A couple of soft resets showed that my Axim was as obstinate as me---each time taunting me with that lovely blue screen before going dead.

So after stifling a couple of cries, I did a hard reset. Then I started on the journey of reinstalling my applications via Activesync, one by one, each of which I would follow with a swift self-inflicted kick in the arse for putting myself in this position in the first place. But after a few installations, I decided that it wouldn't hurt to give my data restore a 2nd try. I mean, what else could I lose?

So I stopped Activesync, took my Axim off its cradle, crossed my fingers, and tried to do the restore again.

And this time it worked! I went from blank slate to original state, with all my applications, all my settings. Why did the data restore work this time but not last time? I didn't care. I was floating on cloud nine. I cried like I had found my lost puppy.

THEN, I tried to sync it. And everything was a jumbled mess. It would detect my Axim and would try to sync, but it then would give me an error message saying that synchronization could not be completed. But at the same time it would synchronize "My Documents" onto my desktop as Guest. So then, not knowing what I was doing, I uninstalled and reinstalled Activesync a few times.......until finally.....now........I come to my last problem----the fact that my computer no longer recognizes that there is a device connected whenever I place my Axim on the cradle.

That's all. So I beg you, please, save me from my stupidity. Perhaps there's an easy solution, but this here person wouldn't know it. I would appreciate any help from you guys.

Thanks :)

I think there is a relatively easy fix for you. You didn't mention what version of AS you are running, but I suggest downloading the 4.5 beta 2 from Here and install that after you've un-installed the version you have now. I've found it is a lot easier to get to work. You might have to delete the axim from AS before it will sync. The other easy thing is to disable your firewall for a minute and see if that works.

Hope that helps!

David

You mention that you interupded the operation in mid-sync. That may have something to do with it. Don't ever remove writable media while it's being written.

Hi David,

I have AS 4.1, but I uninstalled it, installed AS 4.5 beta, but still the same thing. When I put it on the cradle, nothing happens. Activesync doesn't start. No familiar "ding" or anything. Silence for 10 seconds, then the error message pops up on the corner of the PC telling me it doesn't recognize the device. Disabling my firewall has no effect either.

Hi Dotan---I didn't remove the Axim while it was syncing. I always waited until it was finished before turning off the Axim and taking it off the cradle.

It seemed that after I did the hard reset, Activesync still recognized my Axim, allowing me to reinstall my applications via AS Add/Remove Programs. But it was after I used Data Backup to restore everything the second time that my computer no longer was able to sync.

Ok I just tried something. I tried doing everything from scratch by using another PC, one on which I've never even installed Activesync before. I installed AS, and the SAME PROBLEM. The new computer doesn't detect my Axim either!

Oh dear.

Is this an indication that something is very wrong with my Axim? That something went wrong when I restored my data?

I'm assuming you did soft resets and such...

Worst case, since you managed to get a backup to work do a hard reset and restore the backup again

One thing I found while searching is to go to Start>Settings>Connections>USB to PC and uncheck "Enable advanced network functionality". I have to do that to have mine sync. Otherwise, I think it is about time to bite the bullet, hard reset, and re-install apps. It could be something you are restoring, or it could be the dell backup program is borked. I used Sprite on my wm2003 devices and Spb Backup on my wm5 axim. I've restored both of them several times, I would recommend looking into one of them.

Just a thought but maybe one of your applications is screwing it up. I would do a hard reset then upload one application at a time, remove the Ax from the cradle and then install in the cradle and see if AS works. I was having problems with AS also. What I have to do is go to start, log off owner and then log back on owner and everything works fine. :approve:

Thanks guys for your help. There has to be something wrong with my backup, because when I hard reset to factory settings, everything is great, and Activesync detects my Axim just fine. But when I restore my backup again--it once again plays the same invisible Axim trick. So I swallowed my pride, did one more final hard reset, and started building again from the ground up.

Here's to fun times!

I just remembered- make sure that your Regional Settings, device name, and user information match exactly what they were when you backed up. That's the only way to restore a backup with the ActiveSync tool. I got bitten by that once, too. (On a Mio 336 running WM2002).

No problem. That regional setting requirement is dumb by design, in my opinion.
