I also have the same speed problems, however, I'm unable to access the settings on my Tasks to limit the sync to 2 weeks. I can change the settings for most everything else but need to know how I can change my Task settings. Any advise?

To answer your question - sync first, then in the microsoft sync window - right click on the calendar and the word settings will show up - click on it and then select 2 weeks from the drop down menu !
BUT THE GOOD NEWS - 3 min on Dell Chat today and they are going to immediately send me a brand new x51v (not a refurbished one) as a replaement !
Previous posters said that it didn't help them to get a new one, but the one I have now is not going to work being this slow.

Good Luck :)
Well I've had my Axim x51v for about a month now, and I've been very careful installing apps, and uninstalling them if they do not function right. I have backed up everything. So, as of now, my system still runs pretty fast. Without too many slow downs, but I have to say from time to time, the system is crashes. ( easily fixed by soft reset ) but it just seems to be a nu sense.
One other issue I have with WM5 - besides the slowness I have experienced with my X51v - is the way when I change the date of a Task, the reminder date remains the same... it doesn't change to my new date.
Anyone else experience that? Or am the only one being tortured some more by Dell?
BTW, I'm just about to try to fire up my 3rd X51v and synch with my Outlook, the first 2 units having been returned because I complained about the Task app slowness. I'm hoping maybe the 3rd time will be the charm. I can't believe people put up with what I experienced with the first 2 which was 30 sec +/- to open the Task app. That's crazy!!
Love to hear some feedback.
I just got my replacement for the Calendar being so slow. And, after telling me it would not happen, they sent me a refurbished one. After DELL chat again, my third (and hopefully new one) is now on the way. Of couorse - now I'm sitting with two that have to be returned. !!

Actually, that would limit the Calendar database size, but not the Task database size. When I limited the Calendar sync window to a few weeks that solved my slow Calendar problem, but Tasks is still slow. The whole task database (including completed tasks) is syncing. I personally want this so that I have the history, so I am putting up with the slow Task performance. One thing that seems to help is to use Pocket Informant to open the PIM apps. For some reason it works faster than the standard apps.
I'll be surprized in the replacement units that many are getting for this issue actually solve the problem. It seems to be a software problem, related to the Windows Mobile 5 memory architecture. Unless these new units come with faster memory, they should act pretty much the same. I got my Axim to replace a WM 2002 SE Hp 4700 that has a failing screen and touchpad, and I really miss the old unit. It was much faster and had way fewer problems. So far with the help of this forum I have been able to fix my bluetooth connection (registry hack), Acrobat reader issues (another registry hack), battery latch warning (duct tape), and wakeup lockup due to Activesync (registry hack). I'm just about at the point where the unit is useful, but it has taken too much effort. The HP just worked out of the box. This should be a lesson to anyone waiting to upgrade to WM 6.0 - give it some time!
Ok, I havent founf any solutions ater searching for about an hour....this is weird!!!
I have a smartphone and a axim x51v. When ever I sync these babies the whole system goes slow, and I mean very slow...pretty much unusable.
Soultion:
Take out battery wait 5 minuts, put it back on...it goes back to normal!
So I uninstaled Windows mobile center (vista), looked for all the files and manually erased them. Reinstaled....and same thing happens!!!
Pda virus? what can it be?
Help please!
Thanks!
SO, TRY REMOVING THE BATTERY! NO SOLUTION YET:::BUT SO FAR IT SEEMS TO BE ACTIVESYNC AND NOT THE PDA
But slowdown could be because of your VERY LARGE PIM database (55megs?). Mine's only 500k (between Calender, Contacts and Tasks - no messages).
Have you tried moving your Outlook completed Tasks into an Archive Folder? That should eliminate some data syncing onto the device. I think you can do it with Calender as well.
Otherwise, I don't know as I don't keep a HUGE PIM db.
You can also see if poutlook is in your startup folder (it could be a hidden file). If so, you can delete (I didn't find it having any purpose but slowdown and crash my device).
I just quickly reviewed your thread and noticed no one mentioned duplicate notifications. If you download sktools you can check for notifications and check if Odyssey Client is causing the slowdown. I had the same problem and simply removing OC from startup and disabling OC fixed the problem permanently. Worth consideration.

Ditto here. My X51V was getting slower and slower awhile back. I looked and there were over 20 instances of the Odyssey Client in the Notification Queue. Needless to say, they are gone now and will not be coming back.
MemMaid or SKTools will find them.

Though a hard reset is a pain some times its the only way to clear out issues like youve been talking about. The other way would be to upgrade to a higher level ROM either from Dell (highest is A12) or some WM6 o WM6.1 ROMs that are not from Dell but available on the internet.
I last hard reset and reinstalled everything from scratch in January 2008 (on the 4th, 5th, & 6th). Usually, I have backups going back a few days and weeks, so any problems detected soon enough can be backed out via a restore.
