Is the Axim X51v Supposed to be This Slow?

I'm a new owner of an Axim X51v (just got it Thursday) and I'm trying to figure out if's performance is normal. It has the fastest processor but at certain things it is incredibly slow. It took 3 hours to do the first sync. I am doing a sync of emails (only small attachments), calendar, tasks and contacts. Calendar took most of the time for the first sync.

Once the sync was done and I started using it, it seems very slow at some things:
- Opening the calendar app takes about 30 seconds.
- Switching views (eg from day view to month view) or moving from one week to another takes about 30 - 40 seconds
- Opening the Tasks app also takes about 20 -30 seconds

These are key apps that I need for the device to be usefull, and at these speeds I'll have to give up on the machine. I am replacing a HP 4700 that used to do open these programs in less than a second. The HP touch screen has worn out and the touchpad (which I always hated) has stopped working, hence the need for a new unit. The specs on the X51v made it look perfect, but I can't believe how slow it is. Am I doing something wrong, or is this normal?

Welcome to AximSite! Those response time seem very slow, even if you have a lot of entries for Calendar, Address, To Do...etc. Do you have any other programs running in the background (Start - Settings - System - Memory - Running Programs (tab)).

Yes, that does seem very slow. How many entries do you have in your calendar, contacts, and tasks?

Maybe consider a hard reset then trying again, sometimes you have lots of stuff left over in the device itself from the manufacturing process, needs to be flsuhed out.
Or use programs like Tweak 2k2.
also check your processor speed

No other programs running in the background. It behaves this way even after a soft reset. I do have a lot of items in tasks and calender (I picked "all" as the sync option for calendar), about three years worth of appointments. But this was never a problem with the Hp 4700 unit.

How can I tell how many entries I have in tasks?

I think I may have figured out why the unit is so slow. I removed the active filter on my tasks to I could see how many I had (including completed tasks) and it's more than 200. With 3 years of calendar entries, that's probably more than 2000 items. I also have a lot of contacts. I guess I'm a heavy PIM user. All of this stuff is kept in one file in WM5, called "pim.vol." I found the file with Resco explorer and it's 55 MB in size. The PIM programs are probably choking on this file - especially since it is served up from slow persistent memory. Apparently my HP unit or (much more likely) my previous OS (2003 SE) was much more efficient at accessing this same data.

I have to figure out if I can live with a smaller data set - by syncing less of my calendar, for example. This seems to be a case where the WM5 version of the OS was a step backwards. The X51v unit is not the problem, the OS is.

One thing I tried that helped is I downloaded a trial version of Pocket Informant, to see if it would be any better at working with my PIM data set. It is much better. The calendar app opens in about 10 seconds, and bounces from day view to month view and from date to date much quicker than the built-in app.

Hope this helps other dealing with sluggish PIM performance on WM5 units.

Same problem with Axim X51v

I'm having the exact same problem after attempting to upgrade myself from an Axim X30 to my new X51v. Tasks takes about 30 sec to open the app on the new unit. Calendar for some strange reason opens almost immediately. But, the Tasks drive me crazy. Dell has actually sent me two replacements, this latest one having arrived a few days ago. I'm procrastinating set up the new unit because I fear the same problem that I had with the first 2 will be present with the 3rd. The tech support guy I was talking with - the person I was talking with who ultimately agreed to send me this 3rd unit - said that it might have something to do with the shift from WM2003SE to WM5. But that seems crazy! My old X30 opened eveything almost immediately. Why would a faster, newer model running a more advanced OS run slower? (By the way, this 3rd one that they sent me is refurbished.)

I, too, have a lot of Tasks, but even when I told ActiveSynch to only synch 2 weeks worth of Tasks, I got the very same problem.

Can anyone suggest a way to overcome this issue of WM5 not being able to carry the load that 2003SE was able to handle with no problem? Otherwise, I'm going to hope it's really a hardware issue - even though I bought the X51v because it seemed like it had all the right stuff on it - and get my money back and go for some HP PDA.

I moved from an X30H to a X51v and I noticed the speed drop immediately. (I'm also reminded everytime I pick up the old X30H). This was due to Microsoft's decision to switch to persistent storage with WM5. New Pocket PCs (HP's included) use flash ROM for storage rather than RAM and this causes a performance drop. There are plusses and minuses to each. I wrote a little tutorial about the differences in storage. If you're interested it's here:

Might want to download Tancreative Magic Button to fully close programs too. Seems programs dont fully close properly after clicking [X]. They continue to run in the background and hog up memory.

x51v calendar slow

Morning,

I use to have an x50v with WM 2003SE - worked good. Needed a new PDA and got the x51v. Worked good for the first two weeks.

Suddenly, when clicking on the calendar, mine also started taking forever to open the program. Including the individual appointments slow to open. I've been a long time user so I've tried everything - short of a hard reset. Is there anything that I might be missing to try before I have to go the hard reset route?

thanks everyone.

Yikes, I don't like the sound of this. I'm waiting on my new X51v to be delivered. I have always used palm pdas because that's one thing I like about them, they are fast at doing things and opening up programs.

Any Help out there

I was kind of surprised that after two weeks, it has just bogged down. And it's only the calendar portion. As a last resort, I will do a hard reset, but I was really hoping there was some other fix.

Why would it only be the calendar that is having slow issues? An example, I clicked on an appointment. It came right up. Change the date to one week later - took 4 seconds to move the appointment. And that's just one issue. But it happenes on every item I change in the calendar.

One other issue I have with WM5 - besides the slowness I have experienced with my X51v - is the way when I change the date of a Task, the reminder date remains the same... it doesn't change to my new date.

Anyone else experience that? Or am the only one being tortured some more by Dell?

BTW, I'm just about to try to fire up my 3rd X51v and synch with my Outlook, the first 2 units having been returned because I complained about the Task app slowness. I'm hoping maybe the 3rd time will be the charm. I can't believe people put up with what I experienced with the first 2 which was 30 sec +/- to open the Task app. That's crazy!!

Love to hear some feedback.

Mine does the same - I change the appointment but the reminder still pops up for the original date and time - what's up with that ??? Did you have to call toget it replaced? This is so bad ! Along with being so slow !!
