They are empty and even SK Tools cant get rid of them.

I had this one time and the only way i found to get rid of them was to do a full backup (I use sprite), do a hard reset then do a restore but uncheck those folders before the restore.

I too had this problem, luckily on my SD card.
You can't delete them or rename them.
The error is always invalid characters.
I end up reformat the sd card.

The question remains, where are they coming from?

My appeared when I switched from Palm to WM5.
As soon as I enter the SD card into WM5 from Palm, one of the folder name was change into "invalid characters".
I assume its because of corruption of file folder... the bits and bytes that hold the name of the folder. The folder itself still works (still points to the right file(s) in it).

mine seemed to be related to ActiveSync as the folder was under AS folders. It hasn't returned since and it has been a couple of months.

This isn't a WM5/X51(v) issue. I've got a 2gig SD card in my X50v with 2003SE and this has happened to me twice so far.

I thought it was from me having the thing near full (about 300k free out of two gigs).

The second time it happened (the very next day) -- it wasn't NEAR full. Only about ten megs being used.

Both times, a reformat of the card fixed it. It hasn't happened for almost a week now.

It should have no effect on your cards but I would suggest that you remove them first just to be sure. can't hurt.
