Let's see, I have a brand new Dell Axim X51V with MICROSOFT WINDOWS MOBILE 5 on it and a desktop with MICROSOFT VISTA ULTIMATE on it and using MICROSOFT WINDOWS MOBILE DEVICE CENTER will not sync with MICROSOFT OFFICE 2007 OUTLOOK at all. I have searched several forums, called tech support at Dell and Microsoft, opened ports on firewalls, added programs as exceptions, reinstalled operating systems, Office, WMDC all with the same result. These MICROSOFT PRODUCTS DO NOT SUCCESSFULLY WORK TOGETHER.
No wonder Dell is jumping ship and getting out of the PPC market. MICROSOFT could not find their ass with both hands.
I would venture to guess that NOBODY here can get the above products to work together as they are supposed to, reliabily and without any problems. If you can - please chime in here.
It is pretty unbelievable that MICROSOFT can not get their own products to work together, and that so many people are having such problems with synching Outlook 2007 and Vista.
Throw the PPC's in the garbage and get a small notepad and a pen. Works great and the worst that can happen is the pen runs out of ink. No tech support required, works EVERY time.
After this whole ordeal, If I could "Quit" on Microsoft and never buy or support their products again I would but how is a person going to do this? Instead, I simply have to give up the use of a PPC until MICROSOFT can figure this out and make their products work together. Oh, I will still have to make the paymets on my new Axim, even though it will not work as advertised. My old X5 was fine, but it has MICROSOFT PPC 2003 on it and the new MICROSOFT WMDC does not support their own products and said I needed a PPC with WM5 or newer on it to work with MICROSOFT VISTA. I bought VISTA, OFFICE 2007, WMDC latest release and a new PPC with WM5 on it and I still can not sync with all the latest Microsoft products freshly installed, thousands of dollars later. Good news for MICROSOFT though, they made a bunch of money and thats what counts to them, not having software that works with it's own.
Thanks to all on this site who have dilligently tried to help so many others like myself, to no avail. Hopefully someday my new PPC will work before it becomes extinct as well.
Just don't forget - We are all at the mercy of the MICROSOFT CORPORATION for a solution here...
I thought that I read on this site that syncing your Axim with Outlook 2007 is a know problem. That Microsoft is currently working on the fix. But my Axim does not have any problem syncing with the last bete release of Vista.
Sorry to here about your issues. I am not using a WM5, but my x50v has no issues syncing with Vista. I am still using office 2003 though. Hopfully they fix office 2007 soon.
I have Microsoft Vista Ultimate addition, Microsoft Office 2007 and my X51v running Pocket Informant all working successfully together. I wasn't running PI when I upgraded to Vista, but I can't remember if I installed Outlook 2007 before or after I installed PI.
Are you actually telling me that you are using MICROSOFT VISTA and are able to sync using WINDOWS MOBILE DEVICE CENTER to sync with OUTLOOK 2007 without any problems? Not calling you a liar but why would it work for you and not everyone else? What are your system specs?
Jadesse - As far as "Known Problems" - Why on earth can't MICROSOFT make all their LATEST software work together? Nowhere on a MICROSOFT site or on the Dell site where I bought my Axim did it say there were incompatibility issues with the latest versions of their software. If there are issues, how many months does it take MICROSOFT to figure it out and fix the problems? How hard can it be to sync with outlook? What more could Microsoft demand for a user other than to have the latest software releases for the use of a PPC? I sure am glad they dont make airplanes...
Well, take heart, now that WM6 devices are starting to trickle out WM5 will finally come out of public beta, being superceded by a newer public beta. And XP was starting to work too well, so it was obviously time for a new public beta, oh, let's call that one Vista, just for kicks.

Pocket Informant is a PIM replacement for your Axim. It basically replaces the calendar and contact functions of your axim with improved software. Like I said, I don't remember the order in which I did things, but I do know that:
Outlook 2002, Vista Ultimate, X51v with default PIM sync'd for me.
Outlook 2007, Vista Ultimate, X51v with Pocket Informant sync for me.
System specs: Dell Dimension 4700 (3.0Ghz/1 GB RAM/80 GB HD) ATI Radion X800 - really nothing special.
Yes, please lose the caps. And, btw, no one's at the mercy of MS - we're not forced to buy their products. There are other options. I choose to use MS products b/c they offer the features I want at the price I'm willing to pay and they work 99.9% of the time for me. They are far from perfect and can be frustrating but usually the problems I have can be worked out with a little tweaking. BTW, my A12 x51v syncs perfectly with two desktops running XP Pro and AS4.5.
Mac OSX is the only way to go for an OS. I can't wait until Apple makes a PDA that matches the Axim's capabilities and runs a mobile version of OSX.
I can't wait till mac sells an OS that runs (out of the box) on PC... maybe then microsoft will have a reason to start being a little more diligent with their R&D & QC.
paulcb - I am glad that you are a lap dog for MS and will sacrifice the small percentage that their products do not work for you. My old PPC worked fine with XP and AS as well but my A12 Axim X51V does not synch with Vista and WMDC and Outlook 2007, and I feel as though having the latest MS software should be the best way to have all software work together. That is what MS recommends as well... Have the latest drivers and upgrades...
norseman8485 - Sorry about your tender eyes. Am I really not the only one who has not experienced problems with MS? No kidding? After trying every solution available from MS. Dell and the tech support from both parties, I really have no other option but to point out the truth. Apparently syncing with Outlook is an obstacle for MS using all their software. Building OS and all the other applications must pale in comparison to such a difficult task such as syncing with another program of their own. How could I expect such a mundane task to be so easy? Yes, I am at the mercy of MS as I have chose them as the supplier of technology for my PPC needs, followed their recomendations, called their tech support and not received a solution. Is there some place that I can return all my software and products for a refund? Sure sounds like I am at their mercy for a solution to me...
Benjamminz IS - I have tried that and although WMDC installs a different driver, I still get the same results. Connection established, but not able to sync with Outlook. Yep, all worked fine for me too using XP and AS...
Can not get Dell X51V to sync with Outlook 2007. Brand new Dell Axim only
two days old. Nothing installed but Outlook Business Contact manager for
PPC.
Deleted and reinstalled WMDC version 6.0.6783.
Added ports to Windows Firewall Exceptions as suggested in WMDC
troubleshooting
Added exception in One Care Firewall Settings as explained in this Newsgroup
Tried shutting off firewall alltogether
Went to "serial mode" on PDA with no luck. WMDC will install proper driver
for either config and recognize PDA with same result.
WMDC will connect and recognize PDA correctly and will let me install
programs and browse CF card, but can NOT sync at all.
Error in Sync Center - Active Sync encountered an error on the Desktop
Also have installed Business Contact Manager for Outlook 2007 and the PPC
Version - I get error "unexpected error opening the Business Contact Manager
store." when I check the option to sync with it.
I also get a pop up error from WMDC saying:
"Synchronization cannot be started because you are not able to log on to the
network and access information. Restart your desktop computer and
synchronize again. If the problem persists, contact your network admin."
I have not tried to uninstall Live One Care but have heard this program
causes problems..
