WiFiFoFum Rounding RSSI by 10s.

I have quit using WiFiFoFum a while back because it quit giving me acurate RSSI readings. It rounds them to 10 (-50, -60, -70, etc). It seems like the ROM upgrade might be when it quit working. Someone posed this question in the Aspecto software forum. The reply from Aspecto was
Quote:
Its up to the programmer of the WiFi driver to decide the precision of the RSSI. You could try another ROM, usually the latest brings improvements to the WiFi driver, or try a different device I'm afraid. Its very annoying that the RSSI reported varies in precision and range but it seems to be just something we have to live with.
Does anyone else have this problem or know of a fix?

WiFiFoFum version 2 on my x51v with the A12 ROM shows the same resolution to increments of 10. It doesn't bother me because when I use the utility, I'm only looking for relative readings...what my WAPs show versus my neighbors.

Well it certainly bothers me. I need a utility with acurate readings and a good refresh rate. Anybody else have any ideas on how to fix this? Or are we out of luck? The Dell utility gives acurate readings. Why not WiFiFoFum?

I posted the very question in the WiFiFoFum and never got an answer, but it has to do with the way Dell Programmed the A12 ROM here's the I posted in the WiFiFoFum forum which was never answered by the developer. I had to answer my own question!...

It's the same problem Socket Communications is having with Wi-Fi Companion Here's a thread here that will enlighten you even more.....

As of right now you will not find anything as accurate as you want until Socket and wifi fofum come out with a patch dealing with the way Dell's WLAN and A12 ROM work.

Socket communications has been giving customers a run around for nearly a year and no patch yet.

This of course all deals with the A12 ROM and the X51v's. There is nothing out there that will give you the fine granular numbers (readings) you want. The best for now is Dell's own built in WLAN

It amazes me how Dell can't just make something better. They can improve stuff that is broken, but they have to break other stuff in the process. This is the way it is in the ROM upgrades. I guess it's job security for their developers. So was it in fact the ROM upgrade that ruined the accurate readings?

I fully expect a patch soon from Socketcom for Wi-fi Companion which is a great utility when it works right.

As far as WiFiFofum? I don't see much happening there. One thing with WiFiFofum it just reports hot spots. You cannot use the utility to connect to a hot spot like WFC will. Even when WFC comes out with the patch it still won't be fine granular reporting. it will be in 10% increments. right now if you receive a 100% signal it only reports 61%. I can run Dell's WLAN and see a dozen hot spots, but when you run WFC or WiFiFofum you may only see 4 or 5 of them.
