Latest Update: My Ax wont connect at home either (without removing the battery first), I am running AS4.0 at home. This morning I removed the DST patch from my AX via the Add/Remove program on AS. Still no luck. Ill keep troubleshooting and posting the results. Thanks.

Activesync USB problem
Activesync USB problem. I have a X51v with the latest version of Rom A12 . I have discover that the Ax is not being recognised by Windows when using the cradle, it says "Windows cannot recognised the USB device connected to the usb port." I have checked all the setting and all seem correct. If I connect using bluetooth, or inferred this connects to the activesycn without any problems, I have discovered that if I uninstall the Broadcom bluetooth stack. The Usb cradle will now work without any problems. or any alteration to active sync setting on the pc. I wonder if anyone else has had this problem and is there a fix? I have also tried ticking & unticking Pc to Usb on the axim
It seems that the broadcom bluetooth stack software is causing the problem. On my Axim, the only reason I use broadcom stack is for my bluetooth headphones which will not work with ms bluetooth stack which is awful anyway. I know broadcom bluetooth stack is a workaround to give x51 owners better bluetooth support for different devices. As Dell looks like ditching PDA's I don't expect any more Rom updates. Or Wm6.
My setting
Pc-Active sync 4.5
Pc to Usb unticked
Active sync connection usb ticked
Rom A12
Lookforward to any advice
Regards
Richard J

I don't know what's up with 4.5; tried deleting & reinstalling. Finally went back to 4.2 and it's working fine.

Syncing Problems
Some things that I have found on syncing the x51v.
1.- 4.5 AS works fine.
2.- Don't uninstall AS; Delete Mobile Device (relationship) and recreate it.
3.- Sync cable directly into PC (not through hub)
4.- Downloaded software causing problem; do a hard reset and reinstall software one at a time to find the culprit.
5.- Try removing SD and CF card before syncing (worked for others).
6.- In device manager (Axim in cradle), find the driver, "Dell Axim USB Sync" uninstall it, (Axim out of cradle) then reboot computer, turn on Axim and plug into cradle; it should find new hardware and install driver.
The first two weeks I was very fustrated with the syncing. Now, it works like a charm. My biggest soluting was to clear the check box in USB to PC.

Ok, I just started having this problem and it's driving me insane. I've all but given up. I'm going to try a data backup and a hard reset. And see if that helps.
I just don't get it, though. I was using Active sync last night without problems. I was even talking on Skype through the connection (silly VPN not working with PDAs), and I installed .Net2.0 framework and Opera Mobile. Not it just WILL. NOT. SYNC. When it does it is for like a split second then it craps out and says it disconnected. I've tried every solution I could find on this sight, but nothing has worked as of yet... This is really getting annoying.
The only other new thing I've done is get Outlook and my Axim set up to receive my university email. This is the first time I've ever used Outlook and was able to get my e-mail using the PDA. Could that have something to do with it? Why can't this stuff just work? :(

In my previous post, I have to take back item #2.
Try this before you do a hard reset. Uninstall Active Sync, go to the folders and delete any residual files (except the installer). Then reboot PC. Install Active Sync again. Note: when I did this it put the number 1 after WM John.
Before syncing be sure to clear the check box as mentioned in item #6, unless you are syncing through a network.
This is a lot easier than hard reset. But, if this fails then use the backup feature, (just in case), then proceed with you hard reset.
I have SK Tools that does a complete backup of all programs, registry, user settings.
Good Luck, please post back what you found.
John

I'll give that a try when I get back from dinner. Let's hope it works...
And you're saying regular backup only backs up data, and not settings and such?

Well, it seems to have worked. I'm not sure what the conflict was, but there was definately a conflict of some sort.
I'm running behind a VPN client as I type this, and I'm still synced up. I uninstalled Activesync, then uninstalled Office 2003 and reinstalled it. I then reinstalled Activesync and created a new relationship between my lappy and my axim. I did not mess with the device manager. What I did this time with the syncronization was I left the Email blank, as I can just as easily get it on my computer as I can my axim, without worrying about having to sync. This may have been one of the conflicts of interest (maybe not? I don't really know).
I didn't do anything else out of the ordinary that I can remember, but it seems tobe working now :)
Thanks a million!

Glad to hear everything is working fine. Next time just uninstall ActiveSync, wipe out all instances, reboot, then re-install. I don't think uninstalling Office would do any good.

Ok, I *think* I've figured out what has been giving me problems.
Whenever I try to connect after I get behind my University's VPN client, it refuses to do so, regardless of what tricks I try. So I tried disabling my wireless connection and rebooting. Then I synced before I re-enabled it and connected through the VPN. It seems to have worked, so maybe this was my problem all along?
Anyway, again, it seems to be up and running.

Ok, I think I've discovered a weird anomaly. The only common link between the Axim syncing and not syncing is whether or not the device is fully charged. Every time I've let it charge up (did so while I was waiting to be able to try another method), it synced flawlessly. I only caught on last night, when I got home from work, and I was not behind any VPN. I rebooted everything as I had earlier, and it would not sync. So I charged it and went to sleep. I woke up in the morning, and hooked it up, fully charged and voila! Sync!
Does this make any sense though? I'm hooking it up to my laptop, so maybe that has something to do with it? It's plugged in to power as well... Any thoughts?
(why do I feel like I'm talking to myself?)

I have had about every ActiveSync problem under the sun and have found work arounds. I have kept notes on what has worked and I posted them here:
http://www.aximsite.com/boards/activ...post1059131548
Uninstalling ActiveSync is not as simple as just going to the control panel. There are bits and pieces left here and there and then there are registry keys that need to be deleted. I have colected most of them I think. A clean install of ActiveSync is the key. Also do not syncronize through a USB hub device. I always use the same USB port for the cradel and my bluetooth dongle and that has helped a great deal. Good luck.
