start>settings> connections tab> Connectioins. Do you see "edit my proxy server"? If so then click on it and uncheck This network uses.... box but leave the top box checked. This will set it self up every time you connect to a network that uses a proxy and you will have to uncheck it when you are not using a proxy. This is just a shot in the dark but hope it helps.

Every time I've let it charge up (did so while I was waiting to be able to try another method), it synced flawlessly. I only caught on last night, when I got home from work, and I was not behind any VPN. I rebooted everything as I had earlier, and it would not sync. So I charged it and went to sleep. I woke up in the morning, and hooked it up, fully charged and voila! Sync!
Does this make any sense though? I'm hooking it up to my laptop, so maybe that has something to do with it? It's plugged in to power as well... Any thoughts?
(why do I feel like I'm talking to myself?)

First, you are not talking to yourself. Second, it does not make a difference to have the Axim fully charged. I think it is just coincedance.
When uninstalling, follow cravaus' instructions on completely wiping out ActiceSync.
A couple of times, I have installed software that caused my Axim to stop syncing. My fix was a hard reset then one by one reinstall previous software (except the most recent or what I thought was the culprit).
I have also noticed that the Axim seems to sync faster (meaning after being connected) when the "Enable advanced network functionality" box is cleared. Not sure if you need this with VPN. The firewall may have a lot to do with it.

Just tried syncing at 74%. Nadda. Will try again when it's charged (nothing else has been changed, thus far).

Attempted sync at 97%: Success.
That has to be the culprit. Don't know why, though...

I'm actually using a Belkin travel cable, so that probably has something to do wit it. Though, it has never happened with my desktop...only my lappy.

Your last step was the one. I had to do the same thing a couple of months ago and it's still syncing.
The new partnership added a 1 after my name (ex. WM_John1). I had a problem with AS when I installed a new program.
(Chilly winter? It's 99 degrees (f) here.

what is a hard reset, and how do you do it? I still haven't gotten my x51v to be recognized by either my laptop at work or my dell dimension at home, and I've tried uninstalling activesync and reinstalling with no luck...I use the thing for music, which I can load with the sd and cf card reader, but the big thing is I bought it to use at work as a scan tool for fixing cars, and I need to be able to sync to load the software updates

Hard Reset= while holding down the Power button, press the reset (in back). A warning message comes up indicating all information you installed will be lost and be set back to factory settings (like when you first brought it).
Press 'contacts' button to reset or the 'email' button to abort.
I found that when you uninstall Active Sync, remove all folders left behind. I also searched through the registry and removed all instances of AS (should not be done without a backup).
On the Axim, go to settings, connections, USB to PC; clear the check box.
Good luck, post back.

I am also having this same problem where windows does not recognize my usb device(Axim x51V) I've tried all possibilities with active sync troubleshooter, updated active sync, removed the battery from my Axim and retried, it finds the new hardware, Active Sync starts up and says it is connected, then never syncs with the Axim, and when I go to start a sync manually, the device is not found. Any other ideas from anyone? Or are there any other ways to sync?

two things to check. first make sure that you fully disable your firewall and see if that works. also check to make sure that you don't have a proxy setup under connections. start>settings> connections tab> Connections. Do you see "edit my proxy server"? If so then click on it and un-check "This network uses.... "box but leave the top box checked.
