Cannot Dial via Bluetooth - X51v & Nokia 6310i

As technical support for my wife's new Dell Axim X51v I have been very grateful to find this forum & learned a lot in my hours of trawling through these forums looking for an answer to our problem. Unfortunately I haven't yet found an answer so will pose my question.

We want to be able to access a telephone number in Contacts & dial the number on a Nokia 6310i. Am I missing something in my sequence of setup steps or is there a problem with the Axim or the Nokia?

On the Axim Start-Settings-Connections-Bluetooth-Turn on Bluetooth in Mode & in Device select New Partnership. The Axim finds the Nokia 6310 which is then selected & a Passkey of 1111 is entered

On the Nokia Pair with Axim?-Accept Enter Passkey so enter 1111 - It displays a message that it is Paired & then immediately displays a message that it is Disconnected

So the pairing appears successful although there is no active connection. Does there need to be? or is the connection done on demand?

When I select the Contact I get the option to Send E-mail, Beam Contact, Copy Contact or Delete Contact but there's no option to 'Dial via Bluetooth' or '"Send via Bluetooth' which there is supposed to be.

Bluetooth appears to be working somewhat as I can actually beam the contact as a message to the phone where I get a message to Accept Business Card.

The Axim X51v is new & has the A12 ROM. I have tried two Nokia 6310s one with firmware 5.51 & the other with firmware V7.00

So is it something I have done wrong or not done that I need to? Any help would be much appreciated.

Cheers

Nigel

Here is a quote from the Bluetooth Guide found in the Wireless forum. I think it applies to Windows mobile 5 which is what you have on your X51v
Quote:
However it does not work quite right with a few Bluetooth phones. I have found that Windows Mobile 2003 and Second Edition sends a number to the phone in a format that the phone will not accept. What you will find is that you will see the Bluetooth connection on the phone and then it drops without dialing the number. I don't have a list of all the phones that is affected by this but I do know that it does not work with my Sony-Ericsson T608 phone. I also believe this problem exist with Nokia phones as well. So I resorted to using 3rd Party applications to perform this.

Simple Call is an application that allows you to dial all your mobile phone calls straight from your Pocket PC using a Bluetooth, Infrared or Cable connection. Simple Call works well with Sony-Ericsson phones. Another application to look at is VITO Dialer. Like Simple Call, VITO Dialer allows you to dial your mobile phone calls straight from your Pocket PC using a Bluetooth, Infrared or Cable connection. A great application for GSM/GPRS phones is Running Voice GSM. Running Voice GSM has features for dialing, messaging, data configuration, data session management and more. Bluetooth Dialer is a freeware application that like the other programs dial a number from the contact list on the PDA.
I hope this helps.

Nigel,

I'm assuming you are running the MS BlueTooth stack correct? If this is the case, perhaps someone else can help you with this, as the MS stack is not even on my device.

I installed the Widcomm BT stack. While not for everyone, I believe this stack is quite superior, and I have not looked back.......well maybe for the A2DP portion, but thats another story.

After reading your post, I attempted this (for the first time) with my device. I was able to get the phone to connect, and it sent a number to my phone (Verizon Wireless Moto V3c) It started to dial, but it was treating it as a Data call, and immediately ended the connection after about 1 ring. Which seems odd....maybe its just my phone and yours will dial differently?

So I dont know if you want to check it out? Its as simple as downloading the cab file for the BT stack. It comes with an uninstaller as well, so if you dont like it, you can revert right on back to what you've had. I believe it will also keep the existing partnerships for you (if you choose to revert back, but will have to partner again for the widcomm stack).

There is the link to download.

I think there is something else you may need to download for the wi-fi and BT to "coexist" at the same time, but i'm not sure as i dont see anything about it in that post. Please note that does not mean you cant have wifi and BT on your machine at the same time, just not runing both simultaneously for some things....

Not sure if this helps or will work the same for you, but I can dial via bluetooth from my X50V (WM2003SE A02 ROM, Broadcomm BT) to my Nokia 6670 phone. I can even Dial via Bluetooth when the Nokia is connected to my BT headset. I usually dial from Pocket Informant 2007 (set as default PIM) or Pocket Breeze 5.2 contacts tab. Here's what I did:
- Pair the devices like you did.
- On the Nokia, go to the list of paired devices screen and set the X50V as "set as authorized".

To dial:
- Turn bluetooth on for both devices.
- If using PI2007, tap&hold a contact > Outlook Mobile Plug-in > Dial via Blueetooth.
- If using PB5.2, tap&hold a contact > Extensions > Dial via Blueetooth.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I am just using the standard MS Bluetooth stack & as far as I can make out this should all just work out of the box which is why I thought that I must be missing some crucial step in my configuration. I didn't want to jump straight in to installing extra software when the standard stuff should work.

On reflection it appears that there is some incompatibility between the Axim & the Nokia 6310i phone as while they do pair they connect & then instantly disconnect. I am guessing that if they stayed connected that the "Dial via Bluetooth" option would magically appear when accessing a contact.

We aren't looking for anything very sophisticated just the ability to use the phone numbers in Outlook to dial on the phone. I suppose that the other option would be to synchronise the phone numbers between the phone & Outlook which is also supposed to be possible so that the numbers are actually in the phone memory & thus we don't even need the Axim.

I have exactly the same Axim and phone as you (Nokia 6310i) and I can dial successfully from my contacts - so it is possible. However, I have the Broadcomm stack - perhaps that is necessary.

I'm having a similiar issue, I have a samsung a870. I can pair them, but when I dial, it reboots my phone. I will have to try one of the sw pkgs to see if that helps.. Any other suggestions would be welcome.

Hello,
I have issues dialing form my X51v to my Motorola L6.
Partnership works fine (I have successfully transfered files).
I installed the Broadcom Bluetooth StackX51V05.cab file and did the soft reset.
I select a contact, select 'dial via bluetooth'; my Motorola L6 is in the list of bluetooth phones, then I tap on 'Dial number'. There is no ring, just appears a messagebox saying on the details that:
-discovered SPP on 'M'
-The connection to the phone has been disconnected.

Has anybody had problems like these before?

I appreciate your feedback.

Well well,
sorry to bother you all. Problem was solved by including the phone in the list of paired devices. I am able to dial a number right now. BUT, I do not get the audio on the axim, but on the cellphone, just as if I had dialed from it, without the pda.
On the X51v i am using a wired headset. I do not get any audio on the headset.
Anybody with this problem?
thanks in advance.
