Thanks for the informative post. You mentioned that it looks to be a direct replacement of the one that is in the X51v. I took a look at that super cap on the web site and saw that the tabs were not the same orientation as the original. I'm assuming you made some kind of wire to connect the negative tab over to the negative connection similar to what Bill Todd did?
Thanks,
Val
You must have looked up the wrong diagram. The super cap I used is exactly the same as the original. No additional wiring was needed. If I get a chance later today I'll post a photo of a new super cap. I bought 3 and only used one.
I'm considering creating a portable power pack for changing batteries. Then I thought...
There should be software that allows you to do a time stamp when changing the battery. When the system restarts from a soft reset, an auto-start program will default to the last time stamp if the system time is reset.
Can this be done with mortscript?
This would allow you to change the battery on the road without losing more than a couple minutes on the clock. This could even be compensated for by the software.

Attached is a photo of the super caps. The left one is the original 51v that failed and I removed from the unit. The right one is the replacement super cap I got from Mouser Electronics. I hope the photo helps.
I know it's bulky to carry, but it should enable me to change my X51v battery without a soft reset, while providing a means of emergency power.
I'm not really interested in soldering today ;) Or soldering again next year.... :sigh:
UPDATE:
I received the portable unit, and it's working great. I'm using NiMH eneloops instead of the recommended alkaline, and it's brought my battery from a 80% to a full charge while running. It also allows me to change the main battery.
I came back to edit this post instead of cluttering the thread with a side topic :)
I can't believe I ordered it Friday night and got it today (Monday) (new year's eve!)

Reason: Added info.

My time resets on full battery drain and swapping out batteries. I just assumed there was no backup battery.
Is there anything else the backup battery is used for other than system date/time.
I don't know if I have any warranty left (its up somewhere around this time, give or take a few days) - and wasn't sure if it was worth sending it back.
I'm up for replacing the capacitor if need be, and I don't mind resetting the time every so often (with my new car charger I don't expect it to fully drain) - but if there's something other than date/time I might consider submitting it for repair so as not to screw something up.
So far so good with the replaced super cap. It retains a charge for at least 15 minutes. It lost its charge by 1 hour. I will try for 30 minutes and see what happens.

That is correct, there is no internal battery cell, just the super cap. I just replaced mine today with the part from Mouser, and I am definitely one very satisfied customer. I have two more super caps, so it anyone wants one, I will mail it to you.

IF you still have one I'll take it. I also sent you a PM

For those in the UK (without access to the low cost super-cap);
My rechargable lithium cell is working fine and has been for months.
[Edit]
If there is sufficient interest in replacement super-caps (here in the UK), I could probably arrange a bulk-buy (say 20) from either Mouser or Farnell. Send me a PM if you're interested
