Just wanted to say thanks to Mike for the great program which I've been using for a while. Also to Bill for the excellent tutorial. Since the caps are readily available, I ordered one and replaced it in less than 20 minutes. I got a quote to send it out, but the cost was prohibitive. Anyone who is decent with a soldering iron can do this. Thanks again to all for the excellent advise.
So I need to replace that little battery if I lose memory after a battery swap??
Great. Oh well. Maybe I won't do any battery swaps anymore. Anyway to have a back-up on my sd card??

Did you read the whole thread before posting? You don't need to replace the capacitor if you install the program mikelspikel created. It's in post number 64 of this thread. However, if you don't want to install the program and don't want the time to reset, then yes you will need to replace the capacitor, either that or never change the battery again.

Nope, I didn't read all 7 pages. Thanks for the help. :)
Now to jump back to post 64.
Ok, got it loaded to my X51, but I don't see a battery icon in my systems tray. Hmm....let me look around, still a newbie, I probably messed something up. :)
Whoops--now I have 2 battery icons. Let's see if we can remove one.
My x51v has been having horrible problems lately. It started with the "keeping time" problem when swapping batteries. However, now unit will barely hold a charge (with new battery). Also, sometimes the OS reports the charge at 5% so I plug it in to charge and suddenly it is at 95%. I'm guessing the problem is with the supercap being so bad that things are just going haywire (similar to the CMOS battery on a PC).
Now I want to swap out the supercap. Having read this thread it should not be a problem. However, the links to the various supercaps seem to have different form factors. Can some one point me to the exact replacement? Judging from the picture in the first post, this one should work: Cornell-Dubilier - EDLEN204RL3R3S - Allied Electronics
If you're doing this yourself, use a temperature controlled iron or be very careful how hot the tip is before applying it to the board. (keep your spong wet and quench prior to applying).
I know it's bulky to carry, but it should enable me to change my X51v battery without a soft reset, while providing a means of emergency power.
I'm not really interested in soldering today ;) Or soldering again next year.... :sigh:
UPDATE:
I received the portable unit, and it's working great. I'm using NiMH eneloops instead of the recommended alkaline, and it's brought my battery from a 80% to a full charge while running. It also allows me to change the main battery.
I came back to edit this post instead of cluttering the thread with a side topic :)
I can't believe I ordered it Friday night and got it today (Monday) (new year's eve!)
Ordered mine on the 5th Jan and received it on the 12th Jan 2009 in UK.
Just over $9 including P&P with a discount. Strongly recommended.
Just want to add a couple of things:
-install the time backup program on the PDA, not on the SD-Card, otherwise the program is gone once you switch your PDA off (due to the PDAs tendency to take too long to get access to the SD-Card)
-opening the Axim is pretty simple. I never did it but managed to open in 15min. There is not really anything scary about it. I do not want to be held responsible for what you do with your PDA but I was way more scared than necessary. I think I should add however that I am a precision engineer and thus this is not the first device I opened. I am also pretty sure that replacing the backup battery will be easy and there will not be any problem - if you have the right equipment (Soldering station, the right torx key and soldering experience is required!). I will report about that ...
-I ordered 5 capacitors on RS-Online to Germany. Actually anybody could do this since they do not even charge for shipping. However if anybody is scared about ordering at RS (actually they claim that their offers are only for business users) I can send you one of my capacitors or we can meet in Stuttgart if I really get them :-).
BTW: I heard that Farnell is more strict about business users. RS is also a worldwide company ... just as much as mouser. For Farnell there is a reseller in Germany who ships all farnell products to private persons however I did not find the capacitor at farnell ...
