Worried PC restarted itself during ROM update

I left the room while the ROM was updating, came back in to see my PC in the process of restarting - I have no idea why. Now I have a brain-dead Axim with

"Data received timeout!!"

on the screen. Activesync doesn't recognize it.

I haven't tried a hard reset yet, but I'm assuming this situation can't get any worse?

Anyone else had this kind of mishap?

You can probably blaim this on Microsoft. Here's why.
You know when you install a update from Microsoft (the enoying automatic updates) in Windows XP (or Vista. I am not sure what vista does though.) And sometimes when you are done installing some update(s), automatic update needs to restart your computer. So this enoying pop up message comes up about every 5 minutes (if you selected no to restart) And it gives you ~15 second count down to restart unless if you cancel it.
That's why I disabled that... It can mess up somethings.....

You can try a hard reset. But I doubt it will do anything. Mostlyy becuase your ROM is kindof half way gone. You don't have all of it yet.... I really don't suggest doing a hard reset. This could brick your device even more. Looks like you are going to have to flash your ROM back to it's recent version. For you, probably A12.
There is a guide hear on how to flash it. But you will need a SD card. I could find the X50 guide to flashing, but not the X51.

Guys, maybe a link for this problem?

I've read this same thing before on another site and I cant find the post, the issue was resolved by soft reseting the axim which precipitated the renewal of the update on the ax, I'll try to find the link and get back

His PC didn't restart. Wonder if he had power in the dock.... Laney needs to use that link Markvan posted. Laney doesnt have a complete brick...
Make sure Laney, that you do this on a stable PC. If you don't, you could brick your device permanently.

Ohh.

So the hard reset fixed it. Hmm. I wonder if Laney's ROM is still intact.
There is only one way to find out. Hard reset.........

I don't suggest it either. In my first post I said that you shouldn't do it.

Laney has a better chance at flashing the ROM.

Thanks for your help and suggestions! I now have an Axim again and it's updated to A12. :approve: And it works all the time! No more giving up and putting down the Axim to find pen and paper since it won't wake up from sleeping! It connects to wireless without any argument! It acts like a PDA!

The PC itself was the source of the restart. I gave in before anyone answered here and did a hard reset, and the Axim was reawakened in its A06 state. I sat through the second round of trying to update the ROM, and watched the BSOD flash by as the whole "make-a-brick" process repeated itself. :rolling:

The PC's problem may have come from me uninstalling 4.5 ActiveSync and installing 4.2. I uninstalled 4.2, ran a registry cleaner, and reinstalled it, and the third and final attempt to update the ROM was uneventfully successful.

Now all I need to do is find out how to make ActiveSync cooperate...
