I have a problem with my Axim 51. By mistake I must have dropped a little bit of water (just a little bit ....literally) and I have a hard protector for my Axim knowing previously my ability to protect electronics. Everything works fine, however, the screen has no light and in order to open the Axim I have to press the restart button on the back because otherwise it will not open. I don't know what to do at this point .....I'm no expert.
Pay to fix it (probably a lot, water damage is insidious)
bury it and buy a new one
Live with it

How much water? did any get in the unit? If you have to soft reset[press the button on the back] to get it to start, you may have mucked up your settings somewhere, but it's more likely to be a problem with Odessey client and notifications, or items in your startup menu conflicting. Depending on the software you have installed!
If everything is working fine why should I through it away? If it was damaged beyond repair I wouldn't have been able to open it at all.
I cannot say precisely how much water....but I can say this that by the time that I took it out of my bag it had traces of little drops of water. Initially the light opened fine when I placed it into the charger....but after that.....nothing. I thought that maybe there is some kind of "bulb" that lights the screen and maybe that is damaged. But what do I know......!!!
As for the start bottom problem....should I make a hard restart to eliminate any software conflict? However, this problem started only after the water incident.
water damage is corrosion, where the metal contacts and traces "rust"
It varies in damage due to amount and time and location. It might just be a little annoyance and that's it or it continue to corrode the internal traces on the circuit boards, etc. you could well wake up in a month and find that none of the controls work, or the lights turn on, or have no problems...

Thanks for your replys. I really appreciated.
OK, first you have to fess up and tell us exactly what happened, how much water are we talking and was it submerged or only on the outside. As Radimus said, it can be really damaging but that depends on what kind of water. Are we talking about a little rain or dropped in the toilet? If you did submerge it then you need to take the battery out, put it somewhere that it will dry thouroughly such as in a sunny window or on top of your TV. Just be sure that it never gets hot enough that you can't comfortably pick it up. Probably around 100 degrees F. Let it dry for a couple of days that way. Water inside the case can be harder than you think to get dry. As far as the corrosion happening in the future, yeah that is possible but I don't think I would worry about it for now. Once it is dry put the battery back in and see what you get. You just might have to do that hard reset to get it all back. It is certainly worth a try as getting it repaired is probably more than it is worth. good luck and let us know how it comes out.
Just a little bit of water.....not much. I say this because when I took the pda out of the Brando Aluminum Case it was almost completely dry it had one (literally) drop of water at the memory card place and it had traces of water around the battery. I don't think is a problem with the battery because I changed it completely. I always keep 2 batteries in reserve so I used a brand new one. I didn't think it would be so delicate......and when I read some other posts when people had forgotten and placed their PDA in the washing machine for 40 minutes and their PDA is still working I was ....surprised.
Apart the light ....nothing else is wrong. The screen is very responsive to the commands (that is good news...right). Now I am afraid to open it and explore it from the inside......because even if I do, I will not understand a thing....
Try holding down the power button for a couple of seconds. The power button does two things; powers off the unit if only pushed and released or dims the screen if you push it and hold it for a couple of seconds.
hi
i used this technique with my cell phone once and it works:
1- if ur not in a rush just remove every thing (battary, card memory ... etc) and then place it in sunny place to evaporate the water , it may take 6 hours
2- if ur in a hurry do the Dissembling thing and then air dry it with the hair dryer
It worked with me , hopefully it do with you
Good luck

You should really wait 72 hours for the water to fully evaporate.

I just want to thank you everybody for all the help.
I just did a hard start but it didn't resolve the problem with the starting button...so that rules out any conflict with problematic softwares. I am going to try the 72 hours thing in the sun after this terrible rain stops :)
Let's see what happens....
Yeah, definitely leave it off with the battery out for a long, long time to dry out. I washed some old computer keyboards once, it took 5 days before they had dried out enough that they were working again!
If that doesn't help and you're good with electronics (soldering, etc), you'll probably be able to fix it yourself.
Someone else on here had an identical problem to you with their x50v (no backlight after water damage), read this thread all the way through, it'll probably help you! :)
As for the power button not working, that could be a similar problem. Can you turn your Axim on by inserting/removing the SD card? If so, you could use that to turn it on and a software program like psShutXP to turn it off.
