Ive had my Axim x51v since about last Nov. I purchased it to use as a scan tool at the auto dealer I work at. I use it for that from time to time, but in between, Ive been using it more so for a music player w/ a universal rf modulator on my 1hr drive to and from work. Today, I went to transfer some music to it, and It said "USB Device Not Recognized" That was on my laptop, A Toshiba Satelite, running Windows Vista, at work. I thought maybe it was a software glitch and rebooted the computer, after trying docking the pocketpc a couple times, with no change. I thought maybe the cradle was messed up somehow, so I brought the laptop home, which I do from time to time anyways, and the cradle. I swapped out the cradle I keep at work for the one on my home computer, which is running Windows XP, and got the same message on either computer, with either cradle connected. Just this morning, I cleared some music from the SD card, and it was working OK at that time. Any Idea on what to do now?
This is what I do when it happens in windows xp(I've never used vista).
plug it in. When the error comes up Right click on my computer and select manage. then go to devices or device manager(if its not there already). Right click on the unrecognized usb device and select remove(or something like that). Then unplug it and plug it in again and it should say it found new hardware and install the drivers.
This hasn't happened to me in a long time but I think that's what I did. I hope it works. :)
I did that, and initially it said new hardware recognized, but Windows had a problem installing the driver. Then I pulled it from the cradle and reseated it, and it came back with the same Device Not Recognized msg. I am using ActivSnyc 4.5 on teh XP machine, and Vista doesn't require ActivSync, because its built in as Windows Mobile Device Manager. The Axim seems to be working just fine, and is charging in the cradle. It's just that I can't sync it to transfer files back and forth.
what about the vista computer....why would it not be recognized on both? I seems to be working just fine, except for the sync problem...If it helps any, I have noticed as of lately that when I would take it out of the cradle at work, the screen would turn white when it woke up from not being used for a prolonged period of time, and the only way to get it back weould be to push teh reset button on the back
Today when I went to connections then "USB to PC" on my axim, I removed the check box about advanced blah balah , then once I tried to sync I got exactly the same thing (device not recognized).
try to see if its checked or not on your axim and see if u get any thing from that.
Regards,
I went and just quickly looked on ebay to check what a new unit is going for, and came across a post that there is software updates for windows mobile 5.0, which is what I'm running. The update addresses the white screen of death and the disappearing CF card, which are both things I have been experiencing. I tried uninstalling ActiveSync, but It didn't change still. Is it possible I didn't update my Mobil;e 5.0 soon enough, and now I'm stuck? Or is my Axim x51V busticated, and needs to go in for a repair and/or replacement?
Hey Tim
If you get the answer to that question would you please send it to me,i purchased an x51 as upgrade from ebay,i have an x30,had to buy a new computer which runs vista ,now neither of the axims work!! and nobody has replied to my question.
thanks,sally
I don't know if you tried this but I had the same flaky issue with my xp / x51v over the last couple days.
Reinstalling activesync did jack all. I erased the profiles in active sync - and tried to create a partnership. It kept saying can't find the device. (I dont' suspect this was the culprit but I mention just in case there was a "remote connection" ;-[ between the two.)
Next, I loaded junkysync on the axim and deleted the 2 sync profiles stored. One crapped out and appeared to crash the unit after a while of trying to remove (3 mins or so). I reset it at this point. Went back in and again tried to erase the profile. It went this time. Next it gave me a screen about creating a connection blah blah blah. I put it in the cradle and off to the races... Now it's running as good as it did when activesync allowed wireless ethernet connections, only with a bunch of wires attached.
thanks for the reply. Windows Vista does not allow Active sync to be installed, and i don't know any way around it,need to use WMDC,which is a big problem! as is Vista.
Hmmm. I can only reiterate what those before me said, and confirm that this is how I have dealt with this problem in the past. My list of possible solutions:
Remove then replace handheld from cradel.
Soft Reset Device.
Reboot PC.
Reinstall Activesync
Make sure the drivers are working right (don't know how this is done)
And if all that didn't work for me I would just back up my data to an SD card and hard reset the device. I have never had a situation that a hard reset could not fix except with a defective axim. (which was replaced)
