Mad X51v A06 to A12 upgrade, stcuk at first Hard Reset

I think it is a mistake for me to decide to upgrade my X51v from A06 Rom to A12.

I did following:
(1) Run c:/Dell/Drivers/R129272/AximUpdate.exe
(2) Click Update ROM.
(3) Click Next
(4) Verify Model, ROM, OS and Language, also checked AC adapter is connected.
(5) write image file to X51V, then system prompt for first Hard Reset.
(6) Press hold Power button, immediately press and hold Reset button together for 3 seconds, then release both of them.
(7) X51v bootup.
(8) ActiveSync recognized X51v, click cancel for the ActiveSync wizard.
(9) I can see X51v boot into my previous A06 and I am stuck by following screen on my PC.

So I lose the Hard Reset function due to this .. Headaches......

Any help is very appreciated!

If I understand what you've said, you are experiencing normal behavior. When you do this update, it first updates the bootloader only. The Axim resets to activate the new bootloader and when it reconnects to the computer the update should continue. You have to very carefully read and follow the directions on the screen, and don't cancel anything to be successful. Also, make sure that you use the cradle and not a sync cable as they tend to give you problems.

I suggest you try the update again on a pc without Activesync for a smooth upgrade. Install AS on that PC and do the upgrade again.

Thanks very much!!

I am loading XP SP1 OS on my 4 years old P4 PC from scratch now, then upgrade it to SP2. Then sync it with Micro$oft latest patches. Add ActiveSync, try again. Keep fingers cross..

Just report latest status.

I did following:
(1) Removed all devices connected to my USB ports on my home PC.
(2) Removed SD card and CF card in my X51v.
(3) reload the XP SP1 OS on my desktop PC after I format the hard drive
(4) loaded SP2
(5) loaded latest patches from microsoft.com.
(6) loaded ActiveSync 4.5.
(7) Connected my X51v to my PC, my ActiveSync connected to it automatically.
(8) Run c:/Dell/Drivers/R129272/AximUpdate.exe
(9) Click Update ROM.
(10) Click Next
(11) Verify Model, ROM, OS and Language, also checked AC adapter is connected.
(12) my PC write image file to X51V, then system prompt for first Hard Reset.
(13) Press hold Power button, immediately press and hold Reset button together for 3 seconds, then release both of them.
(14) X51v bootup.
(15) ActiveSync recognized X51v, click cancel for the ActiveSync wizard.
(16) I can see X51v boot into my previous A06
(17) I still got following screen on my PC forever.

Now I am stuck

I am sorry to hear what is happening. I really hope I can help... Unfortunately, being a 2-week newbie to both Dell Axim and the entire pda world, I have not a clue myself. It was only this morning when I got somewhat of a clue on what ROM update is and found out what version is on my X51. In fact, I was thinking of this same A06 to A12 update when I went on both dell.com and this site to look for answer before proceeding.

I did see some postings of people with X51v that made update from A06 to A12 without any problems.

I know none of my words can be of any help. I am completely clueless. I am not sure if dell's phone support can be of any help... Maybe try a search on this site and pm to those who are successful in doing so. I am unable to locate that thread...

Are you sure that you did a hard reset and not a soft reset? When you do a hard reset, you should see a message on the screen asking you to press a button (calendar I think it is) to continue and that all data will be lost. I don't see that in your message. If you don't get the machine hard reset the update can't and won't continue. Once you get a hard reset, the machine will be like it was when new and you'll have to go through that startup nonsense before you re-sync. Again, unless you get a message telling you to hit the calendar button (one of the 4 silver buttons, not tapping the screen) and confirm will you have a hard reset. And, everything installed on the unit will be wiped out. Probably not a bad idea to remove all storage cards until you're finished with the update.

Thanks very much!

It seems your A6 to A12 upgrade experience is very different from the others'.

I take POST#2 in following thread as reference.
http://www.aximsite.com/boards/x50-x...step-step.html
And I see :
"-In the Dell Axim System Update Utility:
--Click Update ROM
--Click Next (it will take ~3 seconds for the button to enable)
--Verify Model, ROM, OS, Language and click Next
--Verify the AC Adapter is connected and click Continue
--**axim will blank out, disconnect, copy files, write image to device
--WAIT until the Axim screen says "Please perform a hard reset" (took about 30 seconds)
-Press and hold the power button (do not release until I tell you to)
-Immediately use the stylus insert to press the reset button (do not release until I tell you to)
-Hold both down for 3 seconds
-Release both
***YOU WILL NOT BE PROMPTED TO PRESS THE CONTACT BUTTON**
***DO NOT WORRY. JUST KEEP GOING!!!***
-Wait for the Axim to boot up
-For the ActiveSync wizard, click Cancel (activesync should now say Guest)
-Back in the Dell Axim System Update Utility:
--Click Continue
"

So ...I am still stuck at first Hard Reset...

Must be, I'm running A12 on 2 units and they worked the first time. If you carefully READ and FOLLOW ON SCREEN DIRECTIONS it will work for you too.

Thanks very much!

The real problem is my X51v does not give chance to me to "carefully READ and FOLLOW ON SCREEN DIRECTIONS" as it is not woking as it suppose to work as other's X51v.

It looks like whoever can help me is the buddy who experience the same problem then solved the problem, but not the one whose Axim is working well during A12 upgrade. :)

On my WinXP SP2 PC with latest microsoft patches, I uninstalled ActiveSync4.5, then load ActiveSync4.2.
