Scrolling trouble

Hey all! I just bought a used Axim X51v, and I am evaluating the unit to see if there is anything wrong with it. The guy I bought it from said that if there were any defects that I could get a refund.

One thing that I have noticed is that when I am attempting to scroll, sometimes the scrollbar will just not respond when it is at the top of the screen. I'm touching it with the stylus, but it doesn't change color or anything. The Axim makes the little clicky noise to acknowledge my tapping, but it is really hard to get the scroll bar to respond.

I don't know what firmware version I have, and I think that I have Windows mobile 5. If the Axim is not responding at the edge of the screen, I definitely do not want to hold onto it.

What can I do to figure out what is going on? Thanks for your time!

Welcome to the site!

Have you tried a soft reset (push stylus into reset hole at the left side) or re-alligning the screen? I don't have a WM5 device so I'm not sure exactly where this function is, but on my WM2003SE device, it's under Settings - System tab - Screen

Firstly screen sensitivity can be the result of a poorly applied
screen protector-remove it.
The touch screen can suffer from poor response and wierd
happenings from dirt/dust accumulation at the edges-after
you remove screen protecter clean carefully all around the edge
with a thin business card.
If you don't have any apps on it yet try a hard reset that will
bring it back to factory specs-power/wifi/reset.
Start/Settings/System/About will tell you what WM version.
Start/Settings/System/System information will give more info.

If you have the manual read it 2-3 times.

Hello and thanks for your responses!

I don't think that there is a screen protector on the unit. I heartily agree that I should indeed find the manual online somewhere and read it a few times, bigtsr. I will try the hard reset like you mentioned, but the person I bought it from had some useful programs loaded on it, so I will try and figure out how to back all that up before doing that type of stuff.

I'll check and see what version of windows I have on there.

Will the soft reset affect the programs on the Axim? I will go ahead and try the screen realignment like Gigi mentioned.

Thanks for the replies! I appreciate it.

No a soft reset does not have an effect on programs.
You can use Start/Programs/Data Backup to save some
things to a SD/CF card if you have one or mirror your ppc set
back to host pc via activesync.
Hard reset will udoubtly cause some grief with regards to lost
apps but if you want to start at factory specs it may be the
only option.

Ok I tried a soft reset as well as realigning the screen, but it did not fix the problem.

I checked the system information and I have ROM version A01 (08250500)

I have Windows Mobile Version 5.0, OS 5.1.1702 (14366.1.0.1)

I guess I will see if a hard reset works, but first I have to get the active synch stuff figured out so that I can save the programs (medical dictionaries, etc) that came with the unit onto my PC.

EDIT: Turns out that the A01 version is the really buggy one. I backed up my files onto an SD card, and I will go research how to upgrade. I realize now that I don't have the original installation files of the drug references and medical dictionaries that came on the unit, and that's a bad thing.
