So my invisible shield screen protector has seen better days. It's been a real distraction for months now so I finally threw it in the trash thinking that the lack of a screen protector would motivate me to get a new one. Well I have a cheap one kicking around here and I'm wondering if it would be unwise to use it? I'm afraid that it might be covered in some kind of adhesive that would make it impossible to properly remove in the future. Or maybe it will just look terrible. If that is the case then it's no big deal since I can just remove it and throw it in the trash with the other one. At the same time I know that people have used plastic sheets from the fabric store or something like that with reasonable success so I think that this protector that I have might not be so bad.
Does anyone have any experience with cheap screen protectors?
I do :)
Bought many sheets that I just cut to size for my many gadgets....
The "adhesive" never sticks to any of my screens (Axim/iPaq/PSP/Cameras/etc).
All sheets bought from fabric stores :) well, once I bought a sheet from wal-mart~

Sorry I don't follow some of that. So are you saying that this screen protector I have should be fine and I don't need to spend $30 plush shipping for some jazzy new one? And you bought sheets of plastic from a fabric store and wal-mart? And they just stay attached from the static? Could you please give some more information on this process, like what you look for in the sheets of plastic. It would be nice to hear it from a seasoned veteran. ;)
I just use the ones that came with my palm. I think I have one more, so I don't think I'll change the one on there for a while. As for my clie, it does not have one at all, so I want to know what you find out! lol

The cheap ones are cheap. They will scratch & look like crap in a few days time. I have been using one from Pocket PC Solutions for about 4 or 5 months & have absolutely no scratches on it. These are probably 2 to 3 times as thick as some of the cheaper ones. Now, they are not that cheap at $6 a piece but they are a lot cheaper than some other ones out there.
I have ordered from them a few time & have never had an issue. They have always processed my order & shipped it the same day.
Another neat thing is they send you a "Stuffback" lable. You stick it on your device. Then go to their website & register the number. In the event your device is ever lost this will help in its recovery.
Well What constitutes as a "good" stylus? If a cheap screen protector will scratch in just a couple days then the screen is obviously taking a beating of some kind and this would lead to eventual wear. Personally I never used a screen protector until I noticed that the screen was becoming a little cloudy where I usually use the letter recognizer. On my screen protector I just threw out that whole area was a mess. It's amazing that so many people have such different views on this subject.
I use my own screen protector. It is made from material used to cover a table cloth found at a store that sells sewing materials. There are three thicknesses which I found the middle thickness to work best (believe its .008). I got a square yard for less than a buck several years ago. After cutting a piece of this material to fit you units screen just put it onto your unit. It will cling with static. You can smooth out any bubbles easily by pushing them to the side gently or must pull the material off and retry. It is washable and reusable. It is very durable and I generally replace once a year just for the fun of it. If the outward face of the material gets to drag a bit I have applied just pledge to it by spraying a very very small amount into a clean rag and then apply the rag to the outward face of the material. To do this you do not remove the material from your unit. I have used this process on every one of the PDAs I have owned starting way back with the first Palm Pilot with 1mg of memory. Boy does that bring back memories!
I can't stand the slickness of a naked screen, plus my brother in law's screen was marred from constant use when he went without a screen protector. I use WriteShields PPC Techs Antiglare. The texture is paperlike so it feels like paper to write on and it is viewable outside, too. I just love the texture and the clarity. I hate the price.
I used the same one on my Axim x50v and x51v for almost 3 years. You can hardly tell that it was used. It's still in wonderful shape. When I tried the cheap ones, I had to change them almost every month or I couldn't see my screen. They also had a tendency to 'grab' my stylus.
So, I just got a brand new Sprint Mogul and the first thing I did when I got it out of the box was apply a brand new Writeshield. It was an expenisve outlay, but I know it will probably outlast the phone.
I imagine in the long run that replacing cheap screen protectors monthly would become more costly then purchasing one Writeshield.

It takes a little time to size it but here is what I use and like very well.
I cut to size a sheet of overhead projector plastic. When cut to size it fits well under the edges of the screen and does not interfere with any taps. I can usually get between 1 and 3 months of use before cutting another one.
Once the size has been determined a templet came be made to make the trimming job a bit easier.
