Rapid Discharge = hot batteries

Hey all, new to this PDA thing and already in trouble. I have a X50v that eats batteries. All I have is a USB charger, and when the battery is gone, the USB won't recharge it. I've tried running the unit without the battery in, cover on, and nothing at all. In fact, the orange light comes on, but flickers like its lacking power.

While running on the battery, it still discharges RAPIDLY, even if plugged into the USB port. (Rapidly defined as battery gone in 20 minutes.) The unit discharges this fast on or off. The battery gets very warm. When turned off via the power button, it will not turn on unless I unplug and reinsert the USB cable. While running, it seems a bit sluggish, but hardly noticeable.

Unit DOES have ActiveSync on it and have not been able to get it to connect. I read a post about this program messing up, but don't know if this rapid discharge problem is related.

I thought I just had defective batteries (ebay and all) and bought a couple of spares. I have one battery (of three) with about 45% charge left, so I figure I've got one shot to make things work. Any thoughts? Program error? Electrical Short somewhere?

Thanks, Russ

Hey, and welcome.

I'd recommend you find yourself a mains charger - that'll eliminate the possibility of it being your usb charger that's causing the problem.

I doubt an electrical short would discharge your battery that fast, what's more likely is if you're shorting the battery terminals, you'll cause either 1) an internal fire or 2) an explosion (I've watched people explode batteries by shorting the terminals together for too long).

Grab yourself a mains charger and see how that fares - there's a lot of USB sync/charge cables that /don't/ work properly (see the thread in the accessories section for more details).

You posted in the X51 hardware troubles forum but then say you have an X50v. It's an important distinction because the rapid discharge was a common issue with the early ROMs on the X51. It was solved by the fake server trick and also by upgrading to the later ROMs. AFAIK, this has never been described in the X50 models.
