I've tried searching but had no luck. So, I apologize in advance as I'm sure this is a duplicate question. But ... here goes
I have the x51v and keep getting the following error
"Unable to obtain a server assigned IP address. Try again later or enter an IP address in Network settings."
Can anyone explain how to resolve this issue as well as what the impact of it is?
Hello. Are you trying to connect to your home network or corporate network?
It sounds like DHCP is not enabled, so you cannot get IP assigned to your Axim.
You would have to ask your admin or go into your router and enable DHCP, or you can assign IP address to your Axim directly.

Hello. I'm trying to connect to my home laptop via a USB connection. Any hints on how I do what you're suggesting?
Connect to home laptop? Is laptop set to peer to peer (AdHoc) connection?
I am not sure what you are trying to do, connecting to your laptop?
Do you have a router or access point you can configure?
Do you know if your computer is set to obtain IP address, if so there is no reason why your Axim should not connect, unless someone set up MAC filter on Router with limited access.

Is this message just showing up on your Pocket PC from time to time? OR is it appearing when you actually attempt to connect to the internet?
Are you ever able to connect to the internet with your pocket pc?

I get the same error. All I'm trying to do is sync with my pc. I put the Axim into the cradle and during the sync the error pops up on the Axim screen. The error only started a week ago. I had never seen it before during sync.
1. Remove the Axim X51V from the cradle.
2. Edit the X51V registry (Resco or PHM will work fine, as will others).
3. Look for the registry key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Comm\RNDISFN1\Parms\TcpIp
Modify "EnableDHCP" from 1 to 0.
4. Quit the registry editor and soft reset the X51V.
THAT'S IT. IT'S THAT SIMPLE!!!!
You should do a backup of your PPC before making registry changes and be careful to follow the directions. You can mess up the device by messing around in the registry.
