X51v water under screen left a horizontal line

I've had my X51v for about 2.5 years, and I've taken rather good care of it. I always keep my PDA's in hard cases, use screen protectors.. I even bought a special stylus that was less likely to scratch the screen. I bought an Invisible Shield for my device to replace the older screen protector which had quite a few blemishes in it (mostly on the most-used letters of the on-screen keyboard).

I used an Invisible Shield on a previous PDA and it worked quite well, so I look forward to installing and using it on this one. I put it on, had a blastedly terrible time keeping the dust off it (there is tons of dust everywhere where I live), and ended up just deciding to quit while I was more or less ahead, with only a few tiny specks on it.

Great so far.. but I turned my Pocket PC on the desk day and found that the whole screen had what looked like a puddle of water under it. I think that what happened was that the spray they give with the I.S.'s seeped under the screen somehow, probably while I squeegeed it. I removed the battery and set my X51v on the floor under a desk and turned the heat on -- the heating where I live heats the floor, so I figured setting it on a book on the floor under some furniture would heat is nicely but not too much, so the liquid would evaporate.

After a few days I replaced the battery and turned it back on, and there was only a tiny bit of water left in the middle of the screen. I removed the battery and set it back on the floor for another day, and then it was fine..

Until I switched to file explorer and noticed, on the white background, a faint horizontal line, about 1/4" thick, that was a bit brighter than the rest of the display and extended from the edge of the screen about half an inch on each side toward the center. When I view my axim from another angle, looking at it with the top facing me more, I can see another similar verticle line to the right side of the display.

If I turn off the backlight, neither line is visible; the screen is perfect from every angle (apart from one small bubble in the screen protector which for some reason hasn't gone away, and a couple pieces of dust), which leads me to assume that it is some fault with the backlight.

I watched the video about disassembling an X51, and decided to remove the front cover and clean around the screen, but unfortunately here in Korea I can't find Any Torx screwdrivers smaller than a T6, so for now it's practically impossible. I'd love to purchase a new iPAQ 21x, but here they cost about $575 (never let Anyone tell you that electronics are less expensive in Korea.. it's a lie), so I'll probably have to wait until I return to the U.S.A., or pay exhorbitant shipping charges.

Do you have any advice for making these lines go away? You can't see them unless the background is a solid colour, like white or grey; they're completely invisible if you're viewing a picture with multiple colours, but they're still annoying to me. Or maybe I could sell it on Ebay for a (hopefully only a) bit less money than usual, and upgrade...

well, you need a new screen bro.

id ask around on the ppcsg.com forums to see if theres any good resources for parts in your locale.

otherwise you can get replacement parts from pdasmart, pocketpc techs, ebay and craigslist of course

The thing is, I don't Need a new screen. It's not worth anywhere near $100 just to get rid of two barely-visible lines that are slightly brighter than the rest of the display. As I said, you can't even see them unless the screen is pure white or grey. I suspect that all it needs is to be cleaned, or maybe to have the display connector plugged in more tightly. I just wish I could find a T5 screwdriver..

Oh, well.. I'll probably just live with it and wait until I've had my X51v for a total of four years, and buy an iPAQ 21x or something, and give my current one to a relative who won't mind, or sell it.

How did you get the top shell off without the torx screwdriver? Just curious.

If you decide to proceed with taking the screen assembly apart, I would recommend wearing cotton gloves so that fingerprint residue. Those could be really difficult to remove.

I haven't disassembled my X51v at all. Why do you think I removed the top cover? I'm guessing that the lines might be caused by some residue or a loose connector or something like that..

Anyways, I decided to buy a replacement screen off ebay for about $60. It seems to be the exact same one they use on PPC Techs and other repair sites. It comes with the LCD, touchscreen, screwdrivers and removal tools, plus my parents mailed their Torx driver to me, since I can't find the right size here in South Korea. Does anyone have any advice for replacing the screen, ie how to do it? I have a video showing how to disassemble it, but I'd still like some advice.

I received my replace LCD+touchscreen a couple days ago, and finally received a T5 screwdriver in the mail today. I took my X51v apart during my free time to determine how easy/difficult it was, and I'll probably install the new screen later this week.

By the way, I put it back together, naturally, and it works fine ;-)

There's quite a few resources for this. At least one very good static webpage that shows many good, hi res photos. It's a .it domain. And at least one not so good video that shows how to disect any axim 50/51 model.

I humbly say 'not so good' since I shot that video. Do a search for [instruction video axim] in the mobilitysite forum. The thread should be close to the top.

I haven't managed to install the new LCD yet because one screw for the internal plate won't come out. I'm going to wait until I'm back in the U.S.A. to get a good, tiny screwdriver that will remove it, as I don't want to strip it any further than I already have.

That internal screw should come out with a good phillips screwdriver. I hope you are able to extract it without damaging the filler. Maybe if you get the other 3 out, you can 'pivot' the filler around a bit to jar it loose.

I found a tiny screwdriver and finally installed my new screen. I've been using it for about five days and it works fine so far. The installation was quite easy and took about 15 minutes.
