I have never updated my ROM from the original A01 version so I am trying to do that today. I am also doing this with ActiveSync Version 4.0.0 (Build 4343).

First off I am attempting to updated from A01 to A06. I downloaded the A06 ROM file from Dell's site (direct link) and executed the exe. After extracting the files, and running the update via the web page "Install Now" button, I got the following error message:
"The system update file can not be found. Reinstall the System Update"
Great start! :)
So I searched around and came up with nothing except for some German site that I translated to English. It said to directly run the aximupdate.exe file in your C:\DELL\drivers\R114959 folder. I got another error message saying my battery had to be 40% charged...after waiting for the charge I tried it again.
The "handshake" process began and I waited for it to copy the files.
The upgrade process took about 5 minutes to copy the files and 10 minutes to upgrade the flash ROM. End result? Success! I had to also do a hard reset as specified in the instructions. To perform the hard reset, press and hold the power button, then use the stylus to hold down the reset button for about 2 seconds.
Now onto this thread to upgrade from A06 to A12. I'll post back here if I had any troubles with this guide, but if I don't update this, that worked fine for me.

Just so you know, you can go straight from A01 to A12.

Yup you sure can but just make sure you read ALL of the upgrade notes for A12 on this site. There is a very specific process that must be followed or the upgrade will not work. A12 solved many of the issues left over from A01, A03 and A06. :approve:

go straight to WM6.1 LennySh's ROM or Makuu's ROM Forget about dell and enjoy real ROM !
