Losing CF card even after "the fix"

I've had my Axim x51v for a few years now. For at least 2 years I used 512 MB CF card in it and never had an issue. I recently decided I wanted to use it as a music player in my car so I got a 16 GB CF card and switched from the 512 MB card to the 16 GB.

Now ever since I started using the 16 GB CF card I have been having problems. Sometimes the CF will disappear completely, and other times it will appear but half of the folders and files on it will just be missing.

Usually when it disappears, I have to insert it in my PC's card reader and then back in the Axim and then it will be recognized. Once, I got it to reappear by turning on Bluetooth and reinserting it. When the folders disappear, the only solution is to format and copy everything back to it from my PC... I have made a habit of syncing it to my PC religiously now. Checkdisk never finds any problems on the card.

I had already done everything in the thread "x51v Not Powering On, Disappearing CF/SD Cards and Battery Discharge - Solution" back when I first got the Axim.

At first I thought it was a bad CF card so I RMA'd the card and the exact same thing started happening with the replacement.

I have tried naming the card "CF Card."

I have tried leaving Bluetooth on at all times.

I am still running A06 on this Axim and it has been rock solid. I do not want to install A12 because it messed up my original Axim. Fortunately I was still within warranty at the time and Dell replaced it with this refurb that came with A06. I redid the steps from "the fix" thread when I got the replacement. After my bad experience with A12 before, I am too scared to try it again, especially now that I am way out of warranty.

Any other ideas on a solution to this?

Personally Sue, I think your best option is to do the upgrade.

It is generally successful if you follow the instructions correctly.
And does solve quite a few problems.

Yup, I agree. Do the A12 fix. Another option is to go straight to WM6 leaving all of those WM5 issues behind. Just remember that doing either one will totally wipe your personal data off of your unit. Make sure you to a sync prior to starting this process. I would also do a copy and paste from your unit to any card (SD or CF) of your 'My Documents' folder on your unit.

The last time this happened I tried formatting the CF card inside the Axim instead of on my computer. Hasn't failed yet, but we shall see. It usually happens about every 2 weeks.

If it fails again I will consider updating the ROM... ugh... just hate the thought of getting everything tweaked just right again.

Hi, I have a similar problem. Since a few weeks switching on my Axim X51V it displays the error "Unrecognized Card" in socket 1. It worked before for some two years without a problem. Now it ask me to enter the name for the device driver. I have A12 installed and done the "x51v Not Powering On, Disappearing CF/SD Cards and Battery Discharge..." thing but this did not fix. Any idea? Many thanks.

I haven't lost mine since I formatted it in the Axim using SKTools. It's been 2 weeks since I did that. Crossing fingers....
