While it would be nice to try out some slightly dodgy WM 6.0/1 options I would first like to explore any legal options I have for upgrading my Axim x51v from WM 5.0 ROM A06. Can anyone tell me how I can do this, and also whether it is worth it.
Yes it is worth doing if you are having any problems with your Ax, but if everything is working fine, then it's not worth the effort. This thread tells you how.
Be aware that it will wipe all your data and any extra programs you have installed.
Make sure you have all the necessary files and registration codes to reinstall your programs.
Generally speaking, a backup file won't restore to a new ROM version.

Thanks, Box.
Wow! That's some list of instructions at the link you gave me. I think, as I am having no prolems with my Axim, I'll follow the principle of "if it ain't broke, don't fix it".

Thanks again.
The final ROM revision released by Dell was A12. This release fixed almost all of the known issues most users were having with their X51V's. Beyond that release are those you may find on the internet that go under the heading 'try at your own risk'. These ROMs are at a WM6 or WM6.1 level and have been taken from phone ROMs to create a ROM for the X51V's or X50V units. They have also been developed outside of Dells or M$'s knowledge or acceptance. These ROMs if flashed to your unit will void any remaining warrentee you may have with your current unit. Now as to how they work. They work great! They very fast and very stable at least from user reports at sites where the ROM may be obtained. There are also new applications that the OS includes that have been very handy.
I flashed my x51v with the Lenny WM 6 ROM (version 7) and I think it's a huge improvement. Multitasking is much better, the unit connects much more quickly and downloads are MUCH faster.
As already mentioned, flashing your Axim with an unauthorized ROM will void your warranty with Dell. Also, if you flash your x51v with the wrong rom, (x51, x50, etc) you will probably brick your unit and make it permanently unbootable.
The best I can tell this process is illegal but doable. This quote from the install text for the Broadcom Bluetooth stack swap developed by members here explains it best;
"Illegal: Probably you are going to violate HP, Broadcomm, Microsoft and Dell Licenses, do it only as an "academical proof of concept" and revert your machine to its original state as soon as possible."
So if your going to do this ROM update do it as an academical proof of concept.
