We had a user with a PDA using activesync and he already had a trust with
that laptop. Now we've given him a new laptop, installed the activesync
software, but it won't connect because it says there is already a
relationship to the old PC.

How do we break that so he can sync up with the new machine without losing any of the data on the PDA??

This is partly a guess since it's been years since I had to do this, but:
Open ActiveSync on the PPC
Menu/Options...
Tap on the old PC's name
Select Delete
