I have a x51 (not x51v) and I was told that a type I card is smaller and can fit in a type II cf slot and work with no problem, is this true?

Yes, Type I can fit into a Type II slot. The only issue is that there's a gap about the width of a Type I card that allows dust to get in there. So be sure to clean it out once in a while!
