Oops, a typo and a misunderstanding.
I meant to say that if you leave it on all the time, it will decrease lifespan. But if you sleep or fully turn it off, it's ok.

I had the same thing with my axim. First it started warning me about battery hatch opened. After a while I coulndt start mine Axim.
I found the reason: the battery hatch switch is stoped switching. After reading forums I'v figured out I am not the only one who have that problem.
Later I had to shorten two contacts under battery hatch switch, soldering tiny wire between them.
Right after that mine Axim start working good.
May be that would help with your problem.:approve:
Yes, that is a solution for the "battery hatch open" problem. The tape on the hooks is a temporary solution for those who do not want to open their Axim. But soldering it fixes it once and for all!

I don't have any equipment now (temporary living in another country), and I'm not absolutely sure if I would dare to try it, but could you give me some more details on this for the future?

Battery latch message solution found here. I did this to mine also following the instructions in that thread. Works great and you never have to worry about seeing the message again.

You'd definitely want to be very careful soldering inside your AX. You could cause more damage than it's worth. :(

This is very true. I should have included a disclaimer in my post. I have a slight advantage. I'm an electronics technician with over 22 years experience soldering. Not that this much experience is required for this sort of thing, but you do need to know what you're doing.

Another ET around here. :approve: Over thirty years myself with microminiature repair certification. Although long since expired. Now, I stick to management. :)
As a suggestion for x51gal - Find someone near you who has soldering experience. :exc:
