X51v doesn't start

Hi all,

my beloved and everyday used Axim X51v was getting a bit old and tired and slightly mishandled in a bag by a mean flight attendant, and for the last weeks it has complained about "open battery hatch" if I didn't handle it really carefully. When the unit is in the cradle, both of my two batteries seem alright (red goes to green after a few moments in the cradle, both for a battery in the unit and for a battery in the extra position at the cradle). But now the Axim just won't power on! Nothing happens no matter how hard or how long I press the on-button, or use the reset hole in the back, or take out and reinsert the battery. I have also tried to press the on-button at the same time as resetting at the back. Is there any other trick I can possibly try to make my Axim start or do I have to mentally prepare to declare it dead?!? :(:(:(

Have you checked the lock switch?

mmm. Try this unorthodox trick.
Take a close look at your battery cover. It should have two "hooks". At the end of the hooks, put some tape on it. The purpose of it is to make the "hooks" longer. Then, try turning it on again.

I think the Ax won't turn on because it figures that your battery latch is open. Therefore, using the tape, it should sense that the hook is actually latched onto the sensor. It's a design bug in Axims.

Lol, I forgot that kcal! Yeah, it's extremely probably that it could be the lock switch. If it's off, try using my trick.

No, it isn't the lock switch! (But you're right, that was the most probable explanation!) OK, let's go find some tape for the hooks... Back soon...

:(

Nope. Very good suggestion, but unfortunately no. I tried thin tape in layers and thicker tape, tried to form longer "peaks" on the hooks, made the cover harder to close and even harder to open again, but no success.

:(

I assume you've tried powering it up in the cradle?

You may have to remove the main battery for an hour. This will fully discharge the backup battery and hard reset the Ax. Reinstall the main battery and try turning it on again.

Now!

Hey guys, it's working!

I don't know if it was the tape on the hooks in combination with me turning the unit upside-down-inside-out (well) at the same time as I was pressing the on-button and trying the lock switch back and forth, obviously some misalignment somewhere, but from now on I am going to avoid powering off completely!

Thank you! :)

Great! Lol, you should turn off your Axim. It will significantly reduce it's lifespan if you leave it in all the time.

Kcal,
I thought Axim uses Flash Memory. So when you remove the battery that long, I assume it only clear the RAM. Does it really do a hard reset?

You're right, but if some part of RAM is stuck it won't clear until power is completely removed.

X51 won't do a hard reset, but an x50 or anything running an OS prior to WM5 will hard reset if it loses power.

The lock switch itself can come loose, or not work properly sometimes.
It can be fixed or removed if necessary, but perhaps your jiggling made it work.

There is a thread somewhere about fixing the lock switch, if it happens again and it seems to be that, let us know and I'll see if I can find it.

There is also the Battery Latch Operation if that turns out to be the problem.

Edit; Here is another thread in which I said I would try to find the thread about the lock switch, but never did.
But it might be of interest, as he fixed his problem.

I don't necessarily agree with that, My X51v has never been turned off, put in standby yes, but never off.
It's over three years old and runs better now than the day I bought it.
